Im still a bit confused about it. i know popularity has a lot to do. Like Oscar makes more than any other current champion. But like does Pavlik make more than Manny Pacquiao? Does Wlad make more than Pavlik cus he is a heavyweight?
no it doesnt, its basically what popularity the fighter has and if it is a fight the general public would really want to watch. Ali and Foreman got $5 million each for their fight. Sugar Ray Leonard and Marvin Hagler got a hell of a lot more than that each, yet the fight was more than a decade later. Plus Hagler got $10 million for fighting duran.
Arguably it does because nobody's particular interested in the lower divisions, minimum weight for an example.
Yes ... because under 147 lbs your not going to make much money especially as much as someone in the bigger weight classes. Popularity doesn't matter ... Pavlik made 3m fighting a relative unknown in lockett and lockett made 350k
Pacquiao broke a record of a purse by a fighter under 147 pounds ... I think that now the lighter weight classes are starting to get the recognition that they haven't got over the past years.
In general it is easier to be more popular at higher weights and get paid more. That said, the lower weight divisions rule the roost at the moment in terms of paycheques.
The smaller guys for the most part are less popular, so they get smaller paydays. The big money comes from TV, namely the HBO contracts.
