I hate to say this but IGNORE the WBA heavyweight reigns FOLLOWING Chagaev's as it was total paper following that. You could actually say it was total paper after Lewis gave it up.

Haye won a paper title off of Valuev(gift decision) and they were calling him "Heavyweight World Champion" in the British media.

We all know the background story(Chagaev).

if Pov had any decency then he'd chuck that belt in the nearest bin and challenge a Klitto.

tbh I dont think anyone in England were ready to recognise Haye as the real champ till he faced and beat Klit.

Not in my eyes. However, they generally are refered to as world champs. Ditto for interim champs. Look how many people call Paul Williams a 2 division champ even though his title at 154 was an interim belt.

That's a whole different story. There are a lot of places that refer to guys with paper titles as world champs.

Meaning a interim champ waits until the real champ is ready and the interim champ stays as the number one. WBA regular seems to be the same due to being number one status until Wlad fights him. Just like Hopkins did and then another WBA sprouts out.

It doesn't work that way. When a WBA champ unifies, they have more time between mandos. The regular champ was created as a way to make up for loss revenue due to the real champ making mandos less often. The real champ has no obligation to fight the regular champ.

Perfect illustration of how meaningless the WBA title (and other alphabet trinkets) are.

The primary purpose of Haye going after Valuev was to increase his bargaining power for a Klitschko fight. The so-called "richest prize in sport" was a means to an end, rather than an achievement in itself.

The general public are understandably clueless when it comes to boxing titles and rankings, so it's easy to sell a "unification superfight" as the masses don't know any better.

No way! Just compare the champions from WBA Regular with the ones from WBO which is considered the 4th as importance after the 3 most prestigious ones. There are only 4 recognized belts that make you a world champion.

1-3 WBA Super, WBC, IBF - in no order
    4 WBO

The value of this title is equal to 0 if we talk of "world titles". In the majority of all other divisions fighters ranked 10-20 fight for this belt.

WBA Regular = IBO = NABO (it is a kind of NABO but for all the continents, even tough lately for the NABO fought even Europeans like Adamek)

Povetkin is very good but he must win at least the WBO to be recognized as "world champion". But note that the WBO is under the 3 big ones!
