He also told to go for short punches and to the body throughout the fight. He told he needed a knockout in round 10 i believe. Vitali was also yelling a lot in his foreign language. The fight is on youtube from different (non-sky) sources (like the russian version) that have the corner-audio intact.
Wlad needed THE FIREMAN SPEECH? What about Teddy Atlas . . . uh never mind . . . He should sack father time and hesitation.
Trowing Banks under the bus because he was saying exactly what Wlad was supposed to do? If Wlad had just forgotten everything he learned from Steward, and went back to pre Brewster I style, he probably would have gotten Fury outta there even. So the trainer is not what was the weak link. Maybe Manny would have started slapping him in the face to wake the F up, and so make the difference, but I don't believe any trainer could have done better with "advice". Wlad just stood there, doing virtually nothing. No trainer can help with that. (me yelling at my TV screen didn't help either)
Banks actually told Wladimir the correct instructions and he started doing so earlier in the fight -- as early as Rounds 4 and 5. Wladimir just didn't respond in the ring to the correct advice given to him.
I agree. He was surprisingly honest. Did you catch that part were Banks was trying to convince Klitschko that Klitschko is a better fighter than Fury (trying to persuade him to fight Fury on the inside)? It was pretty loud.
We've never seen pre OR post-Steward Wlad in an actual "dogfight" at all. In other words, we haven't seen him in the kind of fight where he has take as much as he can dish out in there against an opponent who can land back on a regular basis. Like you alluded to a few posts ago, a tremendous reason why is because of very careful matchmaking and heavy reliance upon spoiler tactics. He fought as if he was terrified, no... petrified... of being hit with a shot. It was so frustrating to see him content to lose his belts on Saturday. I truly believe Wladimir is going to have to "fight" Fury in order to win the rematch. He may have to get down in the trenches in order to change the result. He's got to f***ing go for it and let his hands go; he's got nothing to lose now since he's lost it all (again). Wladimir never stays down, so he's going to come back. But he needs the correct approach for the Fury rematch... if he intends to be successful. It's on him to follow his corner's instructions. Johnathan Banks wasn't the problem; Wlad's inability (or refusal) to follow his corner's advice was.
Eh... I wouldn't say so. Peter barely landed anything of note in that fight and had a tremendously difficult time getting anything to connect that wasn't a rabbit punch. He only really connected something semi-decent on Wlad in the 10th and Wlad was retreating, which took something off the shot (that put him down). Peter was a heavy bag that night. He got outclassed and only had a bit of "success" because Wladimir was still rebuilding his confidence at that point. Wlad beat him senseless, despite looking like he wanted to go to the canvas after a stiff breeze brushed past him. That fight wasn't competitive. Steward knew full well that Sam was hyped up and had very limited technical ability and experience by comparison. It was perfect matchmaking, yet Wlad 'almost' capitulated anyway. I picked Wlad to win that fight by KO, which he almost did (in the 12th). He landed (and clinched) at will and it was only the fact that Peter ate so many shots that caused Wlad to hit the brink of seeing "panic mode" again. There was also a LOT of holding in Wlad-Peter I.
Dont see how Banks is to blame for Wlads lack of heart, i will never forget few time Emanuel had to yell at Wlad like its his first fight to let his hands go, he simply has mental issues and heart issues, he was content with losing his belts and not taking risk IMO its terrible for champion to give away belts like that... Its amazing how much heart Vitali has and how much WLad lacks in that department.
That stuck to me too. Steward was yelling, begging, urging Klitschko...yet he was content with taking 0.0 risks. Klitschko in the Fury fight looked content that he wasn't getting knocked down or knocked out (that was his victory). The championship belts didn't seem to exist for him.
YES. Banks was along for the ride, but when Wlad needed him for confidence and instructions, he sucked! Banks told Wlad to go to the body? Really, vs. a very mobile and longer fighter? GTFO! Better instructions would be to throw and commit to 20 or more jabs around, and dare Fury to try to land his looping right hand, which did little damage, then counter with the hook. IMO Wlad needs a trainer to sharpen up his jab and thrown punishing right hands and left hooks more frequently. Had Wlad landed one good right hand early, Fury would have been gun shy.
A good trainer has his fighters trust and respect. When he says something, the fighter can listen. Banks was offering the wrong advice and was anything but inspirational. If Manny was alive and in the corner, I think he guides Wlad out of the fog.
