I was just watching something about professional wrestlers and Chris Benoit. They were saying that maybe his murder/suicide was caused by repeated concussons tot he head. I was watching another show earlier in the week and the talk about how NFL players are affected by repeated concussions and they talk about getting health benefits and all this other stuff for these athletes. But what about boxers?

Boxers, being one and feeling the effects as well as reading up on it, suffer far more concussions than any of thes other atheltes. Boxers suffer multiple concussions in one night. Hell, a KO or being hit with a punch that should have KOd you is a helluva concussion. If not a big concussion, boxers suffer many many light concussions in a fight or in sparring.

Im never able to articulate what i have to say but i hope some of you get the point of what im saying. Where are the guys looking out for boxers? i havnt once seen a show about boxers or helping boxers. Where are hte help for these modern gladiatios?

actually, it is quite sad that many boxers live miserable lives after they retire from the sport. many of them give it all in the ring, get beat up, get old, and retire. and very few of them retire broke. i actually don't know if there is a organization that takes care of these boxers but it would be really nice if the fighters today, who are making tons of money, help out those who paved the way for them. instead of pbf throwing cash in bars, he should help out old boxers who gave it their all and ended up with nothing. fighters helping fighters

i guess its because its so hard to regulate. there are millions of boxers out there i think. its so easy to become a pro that you get guys who only have like 5 fights and retire, some have 1 fight and retire. what do you do with thsoe guys? how do you regulate which guys should get benefits and which guys dont

Sports mirror our very own caste system.

For every kid that grows up in a ghetto with no hope of seeing a long happy life, there is a kid looking to make the most of his ability doing the only thing he knows how - fight.

This is different than the higher education families who put their kids through college, buy them cars, pay for their healthcare and show a genuine amount of consideration. This system of care has basically transcended into the sports they love and particpate in.

Boxing is the anti-sport. It is the haven for those who never considered the aforementioned support system. It is for those who come from the seedy urban areas and downtrodden country backgrounds. As with life, boxers have to look out for their own health. They have to balance their own budget. Their futures depend entirely on how they live their lives, not what others do for them.

This is why nobody cares. If you expect someone to care, then the care has to first start with that kid who walks into the gym. Not after the fact.

that was very deep ambition, and very heartfelt. it doesnt change the fact that boxers have nothing to fall back on and nothing to live for after boxing considering the way they are treated.

The great irony of boxing is that the ring is the most dangerous place yet for many fighters it is their sanctuary. Once they retire their lives fall apart. Look at Trevor Berbick. The guy was a nutcase outside of the ring. He was safer going 12 rounds than being on his own block.

No. He's the one who fought the guy who chased a guy in Big Bear. The man you're thinking of is O'Neil Bell. I like Bell too but he's got a screw loose.

It is dependent upon the individual. If he has reached a point whereas he is generating a regular, good income, comensurate with his ability and potential...then it is incumbent upon him to invest a regular, or lump sum payment/s into an investment portfolio. Whether that be in the form of financial managed portfolios, property, or any other blue chip investments.

Too many boxers begin to rise and earn money which is beyond their comprehension. They think it will go on forever and live silly, extravagant lifestyles.

Here in South Africa, guys like Baby Jake Motlala and Brian Mitchell, were fairly wise and invested their earnings in long term returns. Others, were the usual story...fast cars, bling, booze & faster women!

Most have just memories and a keepsake gold chain around their necks!

If I was a fighter. I would ensure that 25% of my nett purse was invested in a locked in, 5 year minimum policy. In that manner, if I was a rising star and began to get the bigger money with each passing bout, I would be investing in my future and maintaining a sane lifestyle with whatever I'd be earning. Upon retirement from the 'game,' I'd have a hefty income which I could use or choose to reinvest.

he did run into legal problems but I can't imagine they were too bad since they went ahead with the fight. Bell mysteriously pulled out of a fight not too long after. Weird stuff from a very weird guy.

I'll tell u this about Bell though...he's damn difficult to fight. His herky jerky movements and his powers of recovery make him a problem for just about anyone in the division. He throws alot of punches and he always looks at ease in the ring. I only had Mormeck beating him by 2 points in the rematch.
