I like Ward, I'm a fan and enjoy watching him fight, he's an exceptionally sound technical fighter and I really like that about him, his proficiency and focus are impressive. What is less impressive is his aversion to risk. I don't have a real issue with him not moving up as there is nothing wrong with a fighter just dominating his own division. It worked for Hagler and we didn't have anyone clamouring for Froch to move up. So while I understand this move, it's still disappointing to see such a good fighter not strive to face the best and to try and make every move a carefully calculated one, where risk is minimised and there is always an angle. This is why he has so few fans, people are inspired by risk takers, by a fighter going against the odds and Ward has not really been an underdog since Kessler.
I really respect Pascal who could of stayed at 168 and dominated but he decided to move up and challenge himself wish ward would do the same.
People also like to see others let go, whether its boxing, dancing or any form of arts. When fighter like ward and Floyd stay in their shell it disappoints. It's why pacman was loved I think.
I truly believe that Ward will eventually fight at 175. But not at the moment. He's only just come back, and there's still some good potential fights for him at the weight. He's recently said that once he's left 168, there's no going back. So personally, I'd like to see him hang around for just a little while longer. There's potential title fights against Groves and DeGale, and I think that GGG will definitely try his hand at SMW within the next 12 months. Kovalev isn't going anywhere. And even if he did surprise people and go up and fight Kovalev soon at LHW, where would he go from there? I think he's in a similar position to GGG. I think both fighters will only commit to moving up, when they know there's absolutely nothing left at their current weights. But I can certainly understand the fans wanting him to fight Kovalev and Stevenson, because of course they would be great, intriguing fights. Regarding Joe Calzaghe, yes, he did move up, but it's unfair to do direct comparisons, because the circumstances were very different. 1. Joe was a big guy, with a natural walking around weight of around 192-196 pounds. 2. Towards the end of his SMW career, he struggled to make weight. He was starving himself in some of his camps. 3. When he moved up to LHW, he was 5 years older than what Ward is currently. 4. He moved up, because there was nothing left to achieve at SMW, because he was the unified champ. 5. Look at who he fought at LHW when he moved up. Bernard Hopkins and Roy Jones. Bernard was still a great fighter at that point, but Roy was almost 40, and presented zero threat. So Joe moving up to face those two guys, is completely different to asking Ward to go up to face the likes of Kovalev. Not only that, I don't believe for a second that Joe would have moved to LHW and fought Kovalev, had he been around in Joe's era. But I get your point and I feel everyone's frustration. But I think we need to be just a little more patient. I'm not going to criticise Ward at this point. But I have heard him speak of possibly ending his career as a HW, so he has put a lot of pressure on himself with those comments. But like I say, I definitely think he'll go up at some point. But at the moment, I'm happy to sit back and see what unfolds at SMW with the likes of Groves and DeGale, and see how the likes of Beterbiev progress at LHW. So I think there's a lot to look forward to there. :good
Logic? you sure are asking a lot...:rofl Ward will gladly fight the smaller GGG and his supporters will say 'GGG need to muv up'. When has Ward EVER fought without an advantage. He is typical like Floyd, always wanting the advantage:hi: Now he's too cowardly to fight Kovalev...priceless.:deal
GGG has publicly said he'll fight anyone up to 168 pounds. Whereas Andre has said that he may move up to LHW eventually. But now he's too cowardly to fight Kovalev? Why? There's still good fights for him at SMW. He doesn't need to move up yet. And who are you to call a professional fighter a coward?
You make some good points, but the part that doesn't make sense to me is that if Ward has stated that he might end his career at heavyweight, wouldn't he want to at least be a lightheavyweight at this point? He is in his early 30's. Roy Jones was 34 when he moved up to heavyweight after having campaigned at 175 for years. Ward has cleaned out 168 and there are only a couple guys he can face but even those guys aren't big money fights. The big money fights are against Stevenson and of course Kovalev. If he beats those guys he can face a mandatory or two and then take on a guy like Beterbiev by that point. If I were him I would fight a guy like Fonfara first. Then Stevenson and become linear champ and then face a mandatory before facing Kovalev. If he stays at 168, his biggest fight (GGG) is against a middleweight whose team doesn't exactly have a hard-on to have him move up and face Ward who himself represents a high risk/lowish reward. GGG will be facing Lemieux, Lee, Quillin, and the Cotto/Canelo winner while Ward will be facing De Gale, Groves and maybe Froch again (yawn)? Those are hardly legacy fights and/or wallet fillers. As far as Calzaghe is concerned, I wouldn't be shocked if he was willing to face a guy like Kovalev. He probably would have thought his speed, quickness and stamina would be enough to outbox and outwork him. I can also see him thinking Kovalev was too strong. I would have given it a 50/50 chance of happening. I love Calzaghe and think he is the most underrated boxer in my lifetime and would have given any boxer at or near his weight HELL but Kovalev would most likely have beaten him. I was telling people before the Hopkins fight when they were comparing him to Pavlik that he is a very skilled boxer for a puncher and is being grossly underrated. I ended up being right.
Yep, I have been saying Ward is two wins away from being a legend. GGG and Kovalev would do it. If he can't get GGG, then Kovalev and Stevenson or a guy like Beterbiev if he ends up beating Stevenson beforehand.
Nobody clamored for Froch to move up because he isn't as special of a fighter as Ward and lost fights at 168 (the worst of which to Ward). I categorically agree that Ward is too risk adverse and I have been saying that Mayweather has done a lot of damage by behaving the way he has. He has inspired a $hitload of present and future boxers to fight and behave in a very conservative fashion in regards to opposition and career decisions. It sucks for the fans.
This is nothing more than a unproven GG and Pac being so called beloved, and Floyd and Ward hiding behind their shell defense criticism thread lol... Won't work!
