I'm not sure if I'm doing the left jab right. Everytime I spar this pro boxer(goes easy on my head but killer body shots) and everytime I throw my left jab he ALWAYS catches me with the hook. So, its basically i jab he hooks and always lands. What do you think I'm doing wrong? I have my chin tucked and when I jab I always try to bring it right back to my face.

Which hook is he hitting you with i assum you mean his right hook is coming over your left arm when you trow the jab as you right hand should be protecting that side of your face. My trainer taught us to raise the shoulder slightly and tuck our cheek in there as well as having our chin down. That just what my tainer said someone with more experience might be able to help you better

yea he catches me with the right hook. Everytime I jab and I'm bringing it back, the right hook lands. Maybe I'm not tucking my chin in enough because after many spars the advice they give me is to keep my chin down.

Yeh just keep listening to your trainer but also try and roll your shoulder up and use it to protect the left side of your cheek. Cos my trainer was saying even with your chin down and your right hand protecting you he can come over your left and crack you in the side of the face with a right hook.

Best way he explained it to me was jab like your looking down a gun , it should be eye level , then the left shoulder comes up naturally and protects your face.

If he is catching you with a righthook then he must be a southpaw. If orthodox, then it must be an overhand right. I suspect you are telegraphing your punches. You need more discipline to correct the flaws in your style. Don't make a lot of needless movements. Remain poker faced and learn to snap the jab, preferably a double jab. Don't jab to the body, you only make it easier for him to hit you. And when you jab don't reach.

i don't know what you do wrong, but want Johnboy said is good advice!!

maybe you can throw a feint jab and then jab(follow by a right hand, if you are a orthdox fighter), he will open up after the feint jab to throw in his right hook (if he is a orthodox fighter). He might land a sloppy hook without any power then, but when you throw a 1-2 after the feint he will get demotivated to counter with his right hook.

    1. Your jab might be slow? not on the execution but on the way back to your head

    2. you might be in the wrong position to execute the jab? allowing him to counter it with his hook with ease

    3. you might be too stiff and offering an easy target? "more head movements"

    4. When jabbing at the end of the jab your left shoulder should be covering the lower portion of your face, with a tucked chin the shoulder will be allowed to cover more of the face

    5. Fake/pump a jab to get him to execute his counter hook, right after he takes the bait then deliver the jab

    6. shorten the distance between you and him before executing the jab, maybe you are too far and fall short but put yourself directly in harms way?

    7. Maybe he is just too skilled for you at the present time?

All the advice youve got so far sounds great use it , and keep listening to your trainer. And remember too that you said hes a pro boxer, if i was sparing with a pro i would expect to be outdone alot lol so dont get too discouraged just learn from every session:good

DAMM THANKKZ everyone! appreciate the help, yall gave me good advice. But i think my problem is I'm too stiff and I have a bad habit of raising my head a little when I punch. I think i just go to work on tucking my chin, probably use methods like putting something underneath my chin and shadow box and hit the bag like that. I was really paranoid after that spar because I really thought that I was throwing the jab wrong lol.
    Anyways THX again:good

If you can see if you can video tape your sparring sessions. So you can see what you are doing wrong.

Because you can think you are doing it all perfect. But when you watch yourself on tape you start to see things that you didn't even know you were doing.
