Some good stuff in this two piece series on body shots in MMA, including where to place your strikes to cause maximum damage, and what damage they're actually doing. Part one concerns more anatomy, and part two concerns what strikes and where to help you figure out how to damage your opponent. Check 'em out and let me know what you think! The old school practitioners of the sweet science knew smaller gloves meant body shots being more dangerous and that holding the hands low to facilitate the parry was a etter idea than holding your hands up to protect your face. MMA guys would be better off studying 'old school' pugilism rather than their protected, if somewhat more aesethically pleasing, modern counterparts.
its an old boxing quote destroy the body and finish up the head. I know its MMA and not Boxing and its harder to get in the inside and go ricky hatton on some one, but u could try and be affective and jab keep the guy busy and then sneak in a good body shot and come back up the head.
they are a beautiful thing and scott smiths ko after being hurt to the body is one of the best things to remember.
exactly, with small gloves you must slip the punch or interfere with the punch coming towards you (a parry) because blocking a small glove with a small glove leaves a tremendous margin for error. jack johnson and tommy burns were known for chopping the opponents arms with their own to stop it and cause damage to the arm so the opponent wouldn't be as likely to throw punches with that arm.
Exactly, surely having your hands lower puts you in a better position to stuff takedowns too? Fedor has one of the best MMA striking styles I have seen, feintng, looking for precision, but wailing away when he has an opponent hurt. His punching technique is fairly shoddy, but, as I say, it's MMA not boxing.
