    Folks,

For one reason or another, the much anticipated rematch against Michael Dokes and Mike Weaver from Las Vegas in May 1983, often goes over-looked or is bypassed altogether when historians' think back and reflect on some of the ATG heavyweight title fights that stem from the 1880s...

I know the WBA, WBC, IBF & WBO have all been involved in scandalous trickery of many kinds over the years, but, all these ABC groups have staged some great title fights at one juncture in time or another...

Now, my point was why "Dokes-Weaver 2" generally receives little respect yrs later here in 2011. I happen to believe its because it was a co-event to the main course that evening which pitted Larry Holmes against Timmy Spoon... Who really knows?

I do realize that both Dokes and Weaver struggled to a draw against each other in May of '83, and that decision was controversial too. Many feel Weaver won with his aggression, while some indicate that Dokes applied more finess and piled points up by boxing. I honestly gave the nod to Dokes after 15 see-saw rds by a score of 144 to 142...

I thought Dokes' left jab was the difference, but, the fight was close to the max...

I think the fact that it ended in a draw is the main reason it was forgotten.

excellent scrap. I was only three years old when this happend, but i have seen the tape and it was a good fight. Very back & forth action. I felt that Weaver should have pulled it out, but since he wasn't the champion (bc of that BS stoppage the previous year) he didn't get the benefit of the doubt. I remember thinking that it was very hot that day judging by the way both fighters were sweating profusely. I think this fight gets overlooked bc it was a draw, much like Coetzee-Thomas gets overlooked. Both were great fights & both were draws. Thanks for the post.

King had better plans for Dokes in 1983, so Dokes did receive some friendly help on the scores in Vegas.... But, fate would have it, Dokes liked to party more than train and, well, it caught up to him in the fall against G.C. on HBO...

In truth, neither Weaver or Dokes were ever the same dude's in the ring after this May 1983 rematch that ended in 15 rds to a draw.

Dokes would go on get KO'd by Coetzee and Weaver would end up getting parked by Thomas in 1985...

It had a bad taste coming in because of the premature stoppage of the first bout and the overall Don King **** of the division ... King is mostly forgotten today but the older guys remember what a slime ball he was in the 80's and 90's ... the rematch was a good fight and at the time I strongly felt Weaver deserved the decision but Dokes was King's boy and the better play and he got it ...

Saw this fight 2 decades ago and thought Weaver won. Dokes looked unfomfortable out there. Need to see it again to have a better analysis of the fight.

Old tape to newer video... I just did it for the hell of it... I'm still looking around for a DVD player / burner for under 200 bucks.

I got a place to call this week in Montana that supposedly has access to units.
