Inspired by the proposed SMW tourney.... All the fighters would be with the same TV channel (Sky) as Hennessy will probably move to Sky when his ITV contract finishes. Imagine how big this could be if Sky market it properly and it's shown on a Saturday evening on Sky Sports 1. These are the six fighters I would have: Danny Williams Sam Sexton Martin Rogan Matt Skelton Derek Chisora Tyson Fury However I would split them into two pools so it would be something like: Pool A Danny Williams Matt Skelton Tyson Fury Pool B Sam Sexton Martin Rogan Derek Chisora Everyone would face both of the other other fighters in their pool so would have a minimum of two fights. There would be no points for a loss (obviously!), no points for a draw and only 1 point for a win. However you'd get two points for a KO, hopefully this would make it more entertaining. The top two in each pool would go through to the semis so you could go 1-1 in the group stage but still go through. You'd then have the semis and the finals. You;d also have the British and Commonwealth champions (Williams and Sexton respectively) involved so the winner would probably end up British and Commonwealth HW champion. Obviously there'd be a few rematches/rubber matches as well such as Williams-Skelton III and Rogan-Sexton II. Thoughts? **** idea or not?
Its a good idea and it might give the division a little spark. Plus Williams and Fury are a draw for the casual fan so it would expect to do decent viewing figures.
I like it but I reckon injuries/logistics/promoters would chuck a spanner in the works somewhere along the road.
This SM tourny is exactly what boxing needs- we'll see if it turns out to be as good as it looks on paper. If it is a success, I think it's an incredible platform that can be capitalised on in the future to make much more interesting bouts possible both on the world and domestic stage. These tournaments could have a significant crossover appeal to the casual fans as well. I think it's also a good format for up-and-comers to get their name out there in the mainstream. I like the HW tourny you've proposed Ish but what about a SM tourny in about a year and a half for Groves; Jeffries; Sutherland; De Gale; et al as well? It'll never happen but can you imagine how good a platform this could be for prospects as well?
Would be a good idea however there seems to be more politics between promoters in this country than there is anywhere else in the world
Fantastic idea, it's good to see people are being inspired by this tournament. We could be looking at the start of something here that will create for more entertainment and will further marginalise the sanctioning bodies.
