There seems to be a perception around here that Golovkin or Kovalev would likely be exposed as non-great if either were ever to meet elite opposition. Are there any obvious historical precedents for this belief? Other boxers with extraordinary knockout power who began their careers with such dominant starts only to fail against elite opponents? Closest I can think of would be Pipino Cuevas, maybe, if you ignore Andy Price and his losses as a kid. Any others? Zab Judah seems like he would be too much of a stretch.

I would say his great effort against Hagler would take him out of the running.

I guess it depends on your definition for this thread, but to me, I'm thinking of guys who built up big ko records then quickly fizzled, making the top 10 then fading fast.

I'm sure it's just a matter of time until some imbecile puts Tyson forward

Mugai after Hagler he did basically zero. He did put forth a valiant effort in a really good bout to watch but he fell short.

Of course realistically he's a long long way below GGG and SK so probably doesn't fit in that regard.

Garza got all the way to the title with some dominant KO's but was beaten more by an excellent experienced warrior than an elite fighter.

Via the exact criteria this list is going to be short to maybe non existent. The "KO artist" cuts things down immensely, there were plenty of boxers destined for this and that with multiple defenses behind them that fizzled, but even here a lot of times it may not have been from being found out by elite fighters.

Definitely not Golovkin. He is a Sonny Liston level boxer. People say he needs the big fights to "prove" his greatness. And it's a fair point.

But in my eyes, it's obvious he's great.

    Edison Miranda

KO'd a durable Howard Eastman on ESPN to prove he was a real contender unlike many blimped up KO records from Colombia

He got robbed vs Arthur Abraham on a bunch of bogus low blow calls

then the Pavlik fight seemed to end him, he had a few good KO's after that but never could be world class above middleweight

Kermit Cintron also leaps out, seemed to stop sitting on his right hand later on in his career, it was very puzzling

No fighter is an ATG until he proves himself in tough fights against great opposition. Only until then and if successful will they show the will to win, guts, durability that earmarks all time greatness. Exhibiting great offensive skills is not enough.
