In a quiet and unassuming manner, this quiet and unassuming-looking pug has entrenched himself in the German light heavyweight top five, some distance behind the clear pack leader Jürgen Brähmer and yet not far afield of peers Enrico Kölling, Haxhi Krasniqi, and Karo Murat...and well ahead of, say, onetime Sauerland prospect Dustin Dirks. With elder statesman Brähmer likely soon to retire there will be a void left which any of the four could reasonably be expected to fill at this point - especially if we get some h2h meetings between them. There is nothing to Bösel that strikes the naked eye as very special in terms of natural abilities like speed or power (fairly average in both categories). What he does have going for him, along with youth and height at 26yo and 6'1", is discipline, a very strong left jab, a willingness to mix it up on the inside throwing head and body combinations (though his infighting skews wild and sloppy more often than not) and signs of steady improvement as he learns the craft of developing into a stalking boxer-puncher. 45% of his career has been spent competing for middling WBO titles (Youth and then Intercontinental) and he shows the same resolve as the competition incrementally scales up, slow and steady, just putting in work and chiseling his way to victory with the jab, by far his best asset. There are defensive liabilities and his MO based on sheer persistence won't be enough to intimidate opponents beyond a certain level (say, Euro title scene) but it will be interesting to see whether he can scratch his way above the likes of Kölling, Murat, and Krasniqi (all with similar limitations, and in all probability, ceilings) to become the best of the bunch domestically. So basically he's rated #1 by WBO and is no threat to Kovalev. His team would be wise to fight Brähmer soon before WBA orders Brähmer-Kovalev.
That's what they want http://www.wboboxing.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/1509-WBO-Ranking-as-of-Sep.-20151.pdf
Who does? :huh Just because he is rated #1 doesn't mean he's likely to get a shot at Kovalev. He just fought a mandatory, remember? (Mohammedi) It'll be a while before he really "has to" again. Bösel would bring zilch for a voluntary defense compared with the money Kovalev would make taking on someone known to American TV audiences. Definitely won't happen.
I don't want it to happen I hope you're right and WBO counted Mohammedi as a defense also. But if for some crazy reason Bösel keeps on winning they will force a mandatory at the end of 2016.
By then hopefully Kovalev will have the vastly more prestigious green belt and not mind dropping the stupid WBO.
Who knows? In the power vacuum Bösel could even wind up WBO champ, if he lands a weak enough top-15 dance partner to play tug-of-war over the vacant title with!
Given the way his last name is pronounced I propose "Bam" as his nickname. ...making him "Bam-boozle". :yep
Wasnt the Mohammedi thing an IBF mando though? Not sure what his time frame on the WBO is though. Guys like this being the #1 challenger brings home, just what a joke the sanctioning bodies are. ...Not that that needed proving
