McCaffrey v Rademacher 15rds 1950's rules. McCaffrey 5'9" 168lbs 15-6-2 Rademacher 6'2" 202lbs 23-15-1 Who? Why?
This is a really interesting fight. I am not sure if Rademacher was the best managed fighter in history (World heavyweight championship shot on debut). Or the worst. When was his prime. Was it on debut, or a little after when he built up his small wins streak which was to be stopped by Brian London, or was it shortly after this when he beat chuvalo, Mildenberg and others but was ultimately stopped by Doug jones. Realistically, the London/Jones class was about as good as Rademacher got, although he was a better fighter than his record probably shows. Mitchell seems to have been better level than these guys and wasnt that much smaller. Going off boxrec, i think his win over McCoy shows this. He did lose to a couple of top class, but i think that the Sullivan fight, while he was slaughtered does show that he was good enough to take Rademachers punch and size advantage. I think he beats Rademacher in this one, probably by KO in the later rounds but it would be ineresting to see the opposing viewpoints.
I'll take Pistol Pete (in his pro debut) to demolish the super middleweight. Pete Rademacher was a beast as an amateur (72-7). Foremanesque demolition jobs. This content is protected
McCaffrey was at one point, seen as the greatest possible threat to the champion, and a great one at that! If you think that any fighter from his era, was worth anything in the 50s, then you will pick him over Rademacher!
At which point was he seen as the greatest threat? Here is his record McCaffrey's record is 15-6-2 8 of his victims have no record at all and are listed as debutees. 6 of the others are as follows 0-1-0 0-1-0 1-2-0 2-1-1 0-3-0 1-0-0 He has 3 draws, 2 are as follows 1-1-3 1-1-0 Of his 15 wins only 4 are over winning fighters and his best win, indeed his only notable one is a points dec over Mitchell.
I look for reference to Rademacher's last fight. It was in Hawaii against Bobo Olson, the former middleweight champion. Olson was still a very good fighter, as he proved over the following few years, and at the time he had thoughts of moving up to the heavyweights because that was where the money was. After the fight, however, he said he was done fighting heavyweights like Rademacher because they hit too hard and were just too big. If Pete could stop Bobo, he would defeat McCaffrey, I have no doubt.
The fighters on McCaffrey's record have themselves very incomplete records but he wasn't very good for long and his loss to Dempsey plus the draw with Fallon suggests he was limited. I think the win over Mitchell was a poor decision, leaving Dominick with a sparse ledger like the win over Clow. Think Rademacher wins this handy.
