I dont understand that I don´t understand Marciano thread, approaching 1/2 "Carnera or Bowe" size. Of course we all know how that goes. For a more reasonable antiviral: How far would a prime Don Cockell go in the "lost talent era" of the 80s?
AFTER THE HOLMES ERA, if Cockel had shown up instead of Tyson, then all the stories yp until this thread even would be about the untouchable Cockle. He would run thru the late 80s era just like Mike. And there is nothing lu d iquist about that.
THE ELOI WERE THE DIRECT DECENDENTS OF BABIES SPAWNED FROM A CROSS BREEDING OF GERRY COONEY AND VINNY PAZIENDAINSKIZA.
Contender who fringes in and out of the top 10. Really it's a miracle he made it to #2 contender in his own era, there were better talent than himself at the time. He certainly has the physique to be a more modern contender but perhaps is too game
At his best, he might have some entertaining bouts with Scott ledoux, leon spinks, marvis Frazier, tex Cobb, or the aging corpse of jimmy young. But a lot of the biggest names of that era would be too big, too strong, too durable, and far more skilled than him. This was the last decade where we saw men of his size with limited ring IQ doing somewhat decent. 6'3 210+ men with sharp jabs were becoming a dime a dozen at this point.
I could see guys like Trevor Berbick or Renaldo Snipes sleepwalking against him, and getting outhustled as a result. That would get him a ranking, and put him in line for a title shot. More than likely, he doesn't fare any better against any of the titleholders than he did against Marciano, but he probably acquits himself with the same type of bravery and earns praise from his countryman as a result.
the 80s showed us a very different Boxing Philosophy than in previous periods. it was more or less the beginning of Fighting DOWN... Men that otherwise weighed either side of a 190lbs and stood 5'11" - 6' 2", were fighting as Middleweights, S-MW and finishing off there careers at L-HW for example. Look at the Stature (SIZE), of Fighters in this period. you will see a, (Generally Speaking), Bigger Man competing in most weight classes, the all too many of them, compared to previous era's or periods. So WHY would Don C ockell (or any past fighter), choose to be anything different than his 80s contemporaries... C ockell in the 80's would start out as a MW, but given the health/weight issues he had, he would probably spend most of his career as a L-HW. no reason he still couldn't have still been a contender. by all accounts C ockell was a fine & capable fighter
End Of Year Ring Ratings have these names for the decade. Holmes Weaver Cooney Berbick Page Thomas Smith Snipes Cobb Ruddock L Spinks M Spinks Bruno Broad Dokes Coetzee Biggs Tubbs Tucker Williams Bey Tate Witherspoon Norris Damiani Mercado Monroe* Rodrigues The asterisk marked Monroe is the only one I would give Cokkell an even chance with.
Oh wow. I´´ve heard (and read) from professional boxing historians that the 80s era was trash. For example, a Max Schmeling was meant to go through that bunch like a hot knife through grease. Seems to me no one is stopping Max Schmeling from a 49-0 in the era of Don Cockell either hmmm.
If by some Miracle he makes it toTyson, he's not going any 9 rounds He'll be lucky to make it out of the 1st.
