I got to know Don Curry pretty well while it Ft Worth Tx. He was an exceptional boxer

Don's biggest mistake was getting lured by big$$$ , fast cars ,fast women offers from Akhbar Mohammad I think his name was. He left Dave Gorman who had been his coach & then manager from a peewee at 10 yrs old throughout his pro career.
Like you say Don wanted to move up and fight Hagler but was stabbed in the back buy that POS Saccharin Ray Leonard. Leonard was supposed to be Don's advisor at the time & was supposedly retired. He talked Don into waiting claiming Hagler was getting old & to stay at 147. Behind the scenes as we all now know Leonard arranged that fight for himself. Not only did he get it but also got a gift decision win over Hagler. Don challenged Leonard repeatedly but he didn't want to know. We all had a good laugh when Macho Camacho made him look the trash he was in his last fight
As for the Honeyghan fight Don had the flu was sick as a dog Dave & Paul Reyes his trainer wanted him to pull out but that Akhbar jerk insisted he fought too much$$$ involved. Don hadn't trained properly though being sick & was also overweight which he was forced to sweat off. He was weak as a kitten & in no condition to fight. Considering his condition he did miraculously well.
Don is very under rated at should have been in the HOF years ago but in my mind what real honour is the HOF when people like Stallone, Don King, Joe Cortez etc are in there
    Don was a great champion
