Just heard about the passing of top middleweight contender of the 60's Don Fullmer. Don fought many of the top fighters of his era. RIP.
Interesting note...Fullmer was apparently the very first super middleweight champion, or "Junior Light Heavyweight Champion" as it was referred to at the time. Anyway, Fullmer obviously wasn't as well known as his brother, but he was a damned good fighter in his own right who was good enough to split series with the likes of Joey Archer and Emile Griffith. He was a type of good tough contender who would have been in the mix in pretty much any era, and quite likely a titleholder of some sort in one or two of them. RIP.
RIP. I was lucky to meet him back in 2008 and he was a very nice and welcoming person. At the boxing hall of fame I saw him every year and he was always one of the more fan friendly fighters, I frequently saw him chatting with fans and enjoying himself. I had no idea he was sick. RIP.
I thought he gave Tiger and Benvenuti all they could handle too. An excellent fighter who would be in the top handful of fighters p4p going around in today's game.
