Not defending Don King, but Tyson and Witherspoon weren't the sharpest tools in the shed. Tyson before his fights kept taking huge advances from King and then wondered why is purses were short after the fights, since King was taking his money back off the top. Also, Witherspoon before the Bruno fight took a huge advance from Don King. Joe Louis also got himself into financial trouble by consistently taking huge advances from Jacobs even though he was advised against doing so many times.

Here is an article showing how reckless Tyson was with his money and how he kept borrowing huge amounts of money.

"Early last February, Mike Tyson, staggering from an unpaid $12 million tax bill and suspended from the sport that had provided him with riches, left his Las Vegas estate desperate for cash and for a divorce from his longtime promoter, Don King.

In recent years, the former heavyweight champion had spent millions buying mansions and collector cars. But Tyson believed King's financial misdealings, rather than his own spending, was the real reason for his straits. Just days before, Tyson and King had engaged in a shouting-and-shoving match outside a Los Angeles hotel.

On that February morning, Tyson met with Arthur Goldberg, the president of the Hilton Hotels' gambling division, to propose a maverick maneuver to raise cash quickly. For an advance of $10 million to $15 million, Goldberg said Tyson told him he would break with King and, upon his reinstatement to boxing, hold his next five fights at the Las Vegas, Nev., casino of Goldberg's company."

At 2:35 Mikey and Robert are talking about King, who was Robert's promoter and He said he did just fine with King.
He and Mikey both agree that Tyson is to blame for running through hundreds of millions of dollars.

SURE many fighters behaved foolishly in terms of money management.
But that is not the same as robbing people. Which King almost invariably did.
Nobody was immune to his manipulations & outright thievery.
Ali told Holmes he would have nothing left when King was done with him.
    King is a True Sociopath.

I like Tim, but he didn't tell the whole truth about why he got $250,000 from Don. What he didn't say in the Documentary, but later came out in his court case with Don was that Witherspoon took a $500,000 advance to buy a getaway home and also took another advance to get a family member out of a legal situation. Tim was supposed to get a $2 million purse for the Bruno fight, but had borrowed over $1 million from King against his future purse before the fight ever took place with Bruno and Don being the nice guy he is lent Witherspoon the money at over 20% interest, so after taking off the top and recovering his money back Whiterspoon didn't have much of a purse left.

Also, Witherspoon regularly failed urine test for smoking weed before fights, which was an automatic $25,000 fine back then. Apparently Don greased the WBA to keep Witherspoon from being stripped of his title.

"Witherspoon said he smoked marijuana to help celebrate his signing for the Tubbs' fight.

'I was at home with a bunch of my friends in Philadelphia,' he said. 'They said 'Tim, you have a chance to make history, let's go have a party.' I smoked a joint.

'I would never know it would trace up so many months later.
    '

Although Witherspoon, 28, presumably faces being stripped of his title, he and King said they are hoping he will not be punished by the WBA."

In a interview with Jack Newfield Witherspoon admitted that he would often sign blank contracts and wasn't involved in any of his negotiations at all. Doesn't seem too smart to me. Who in the world with a brain signs a blank contract?

"But Witherspoon had no clue how much he was getting paid. He can't even remember signing a contract for the Bruno match and assumes King just used the signature page of one of the many blank contracts he'd signed over the years."

Admittedly Don King would screw you just like any promoter if you let him and the ethical thing for King to do would be not to give the fighter huge advances they can't afford, but its Tim's fault he kept taking advances.

Chavez also got himself into financial trouble with Don, by taking huge advances against his future fights purses.

"In March 1991, two months before the Brazier fight was to be held, Chavez had borrowed $736,000 from King, agreeing that it should be taken out of the $2 million purse he expected to receive in the bout. When that fight was canceled, King sought to recoup some of his losses from the insurance company, prosecutors said."

Like talking Ali out of retirement to fight Larry Holmes. Rigging Holyfield Lewis 1. Peter McNeeley being ranked in the top 10. The countless John Ruiz title shots. Yes King did wonders for boxing.

Is that why they gave William F Buckley his own his own platform for thirty years, and allowed obvious hucksters like Suze Orman and "doctor" Wayne Dyer do free infomercials during their pledge drives? Is that why Masterpiece Theater was underwritten by Exxon-Mobil?
PBS isn't any kind of ideological institution; it's a quasi-business that's undergone a gradual and by now almost complete process of corporatization.

Yup, the whole country has grown more invaded & overtaken by corporate power.
The fact that many promoters (like, say Landlords) might well rip you off does not mean all are vicious monsters & endlessly corrupt-or anything as extreme as Trump.
He would wave any flag for his own self interests.
Israel has many flaws but is more Democratic than say any surrounding Arabic countries, that given the slightest dissent will crack down on opposition way harder than Israel.
American politicians all but literally wave the Saudi flag for their moneyed self-interest & supporters (some would say puppet masters)...
Though there record on human & woman's rights & torture & an kind of real judicial system, fuhgettibout encouraging & teaching to all their young the worst hatred of other religions-Jews, Chistians, & enabling fundamentalist terrorists-most of the 911 guys were from there...Makes Israel look like Ghandi/MLK by comparison.

While I totally agree, a lot of people are not like that. Look how many cult leaders, dictators, large scale financial scammers, etc. were obviously creepy or insane or obvious liars...and yet people just went right along. Everyone from Jim Jones or that Heaven's Gate wacko or Manson to larger scale maniacs like Hitler were creepy weirdos that anyone should immediately have seen for exactly what they were, and yet people didn't, and were even willing to kill or die for them. People see what they want to see unfortunately. And they are willing to listen to someone who tells them what they want to hear, even when it's obvious lies...which is how I think Don King got so successful.
