Don Lee vs Tony Sibson (A "dangerous" six knockdown affair, great fight!)

Don Lee shows, in my opinion, true knockout power in this bout. He has all sorts of limitations, but he showed why he was 19-1 with 19 knockouts. The first short left hook that drops Sibson? Listen to how quiet and seemingly awe struck the crowd is, especially after having just seen Lee himself down at the end of round 1. It only gets worse from there on in for the oddly detached crowd however.

Sibson was hardly a spent force here. His loss to Hagler was only a year in the past, and just three months previous to this bout he had a showcase fight where he was brought to the US against a padded record power puncher in John Collins. He was 25 years old, to Lee's 23. Seems to be that Don Lee simply simply may have lived up to his potential that night, or perhaps even over achieved considering his limitations. Either way, and whatever you choose to say about the man, no doubt that Lee's nickname of "Dangerous" was very apt.

A pretty damned fine fight, and one I hope at least a few of our members haven't seen. Enjoy.

I like watching Lee, not the most skilled operator I've ever seen but he punched with conviction, doing so with the intent to really take his opponent out of there. Used his size well. Had an odd rhythm at times.

He dealt with relative inactivity after and leading up to this fight. Was very active, I don't know if he had a hard time getting fights, motivation issues, what.

    Fun bit of trivia -

Art McCloud was the first fighter to beat Don Lee, by way of first round knockout in December 1982... He was also the first fighter to beat Frank "The Animal" Fletcher back in 1977, by way of a six round points decision.

Sibson really lost focus as he was prone to do and dropped the ball here fresh off battering Collins. He was square in his prime but someone with Lee's power and switch getting was always going to be a potential banana skin for Tony with that type of height and reach advantage. Just one of those things, and I think Sibbo was a lot better than Hagler and Lee made him look tbh. I'll try to rewatch this when I get a chance...

I don't think he so much looks bad in either fight, Hagler or Lee. Sibson just ran into assets each fighter had that he couldn't deal with... In Lee's it was a 6'2 switch hitting guy with nuclear power and pin point sharp shooting. A bad style match up for anyone, really.

I'm currently scoring the fight, and have heard about this time Lee was robbed in Dewitt's backyard during their bout. Should have won 6-7 clear rounds but all three judges scored the bout 5-5. We'll see.

Another interesting and useless bit of information...

There was no three knockdown rule in place in New Jersey when this bout took place, despite most of the US having already adopted the rule. If the rule was in effect, Lee would have a TKO3 victory Sibson, which is a win that would look awfully fine on one's resume, in my opinion.

Yeah I'd heard that the DeWitt fight was a bad decision but don't know much about it other than what I've heard.

Sibson was a very, very good fighter for me when on point and is underrated these days. Quality left hook Philly style, and a formidable combination hitter with excellent form and hand speed with a quite sophisticated rolling slip and counter game. He had short arms though and a tendency to lose his form and focus if things weren't working against guys who didn't play to his strengths, getting caught in between styles somewhat. Less than the sum of his parts so to speak. Like you say, someone like Lee was always going to be dangerous.

You seen his fights with Minter and Finnegan

Don Lee because of managerial problems ( 4 fights in 3 yrs after Sibson fight ) and weight problems , inactivity never fulfilled his massive potential. A shame because a 6'2 hard hitting southpaw should have been a sure thing to become World Champ.

I'm a huge fan of his and really do think he had world class potential. It's a shame it all fizzled out so completely multiple times over, whatever momentum he was capable of making for himself, that is.

    Great fight.
When I was in 9th or 10th grade, my gym teacher brought Don Lee to our school in Milwaukee- he wanted to show us real grit- that was the fight we watched.

Mr.Arena, a former Denver Bronco who blew out his knee, man was he too mean too macho. I remember fights breaking out in gym class..and he had this mobile like desk..as a kid got whomped almost on the desk...he rolled away and kept taking attendance. didnt even try to stop it. ooops, rambling my bad...memories does that!!!
