Donaire: Best opponents keep avoiding me source: http://www.abs-cbnnews.com/sports/03/03/10/donaire-best-opponents-keep-avoiding-me MANILA, Philippines World interim super flyweight champ Nonito Donaire said he's again considering moving up in weight class since other fighters in his division are veering away from him. Donaire, who had just defended his World Boxing Association (WBA) interim title against Manuel Vargas, said he wanted to face elite fighters in the 115-pound division but his prospective opponents didnt seem to be up for it. Meron namang quality opponents [in the flyweight division] pero hindi lumalaban sa akin eh. Lagi kaming pinahihirapan sa negotiations, said Donaire, adjudged by The Ring Magazine as the top 6 pound-for-pound fighter in the world. Among the quality opponents hes referring to are his arch nemesis Vic Darchinyan, who holds the WBA and World Boxing Council (WBC) super flyweight titles, and Jorge Arce, who reigns as World Boxing Organization (WBO) super flyweight king. Donaire said he wanted to be a record-setter like Pacquiao by winning the 3 titles in order to become the first Asian undisputed world champion. Yun ang goal ko, kahit nung bata pa ako yun na ang goal ko, he said. Donaire, however, said that if his potential opponents in the super flyweight division keep on playing hard to get, then hell climb the 118-pound class and challenge Fernando Montiel for the WBO bantamweight title. The US-based Pinoy became an instant boxing star when he knocked out the heavily-favored Darchinyan in 2007 to win the International Boxing Federation (IBF) and International Boxing Organization (IBO) flyweight titles. In 2009, Donaire climbed the super flyweight division and won the WBA interim title by beating Rafael Concepcion of Panama via unanimous decision.
Jorge Arce is not a top quality opponent, he is done! But he does have a belt, so i'm sure that'll be Donairs next opponent. An easy belt for the taking.
If Arum didn't keep trying to lowball the better competition, he might face some. It's not all Donaire's fault that he's fighting scrubs, but he could surely hold Bob Arum's ass to the fire and he doesn't. Arce, Montiel, Morel, etc. are all on Top Rank's payroll and fights with those guys could easily be made. It's not like he's been pushing for them. Arce may be toast, but he's still a step up from most of the schlubs Nonito has faced since leaving Gary Shaw.
I don't know why this article has darchiyan's name in there. Vic has been vehement in campaigning for a donaire rematch, and even shaw is on board with this rematch. If donaire really wants vic he can have him.
Ironically I sent Gary a message thanking him for taking risks with his fighters and he actually replied to thank me. I think its safe to say if a fighter signs with Arum they will fight bums. So I agree Arum is making Nonito look bad.
Donaire is full of hot air...Vic's has been continually calling him for some time now and Donaire hasnt been nearly as vocal. Arum has flat out stated he doesnt think the fight makes economic sense.
I like Donaire but I'm really becoming frustrated with how his career has progressed since his sensational win over Vic D. I thought he was on the rode to stardom but it hasn't worked out that way. Some of his best years are being wasted away fighting B- fighters or less. I don't know if it's his management or he himself is to blame. Lets just hope he gets this fixed sooner than later and we'll see him in the ring with better comp.
Really, and i think the ring is overrating him putting him at #6 p4p just for beating vic darchinyan and NOBODY else. I'd like to see what nonito would do to montiel at 118. I personally think he'd lose.
I agree Donaire is good possibly even great but # 6 P4P is too much right now. With that said I think he beats Montiel at 118.
He said it himself...and when he says that it basically means it doesnt make economic sense for him because he doesnt promote Darchinyan. He would rather Donaire fight one of his boys so he can get the biggest slice of the pie. This has been the Bobfather's method for as long as I can remember.
Alot of fighters have 30 fights fighting nobodies then they go up a level. Like Julio ceasar Chaves Snr and Jnr no one was complaining! :happy
