Wasnt his best performance but got the job done and Vic was a punch or 2 from going 2 sleep but Donaire saying is the post fight interview that he had 2 ask himself if he wanted it isnt right Rigo might have finished him
Did you just evaluate his level of maturity with the help of his hair and clothing style? That is actually pretty funny in an ironic way. Certainly wasn't his best showing but who knows, might have just been an offnight.. It will show in his next fights if he still has enough in the tank to bring some very good performances. Some people in here are selling Vic a bit too short, he is clearly past it but their aren't too many guys around with a better resume, the guy is a good spoiler and a world level veteran, still hard to beat
He didn't dominate Vic 7 yrs ago. The fight was even at the time of the ko. He just needs to stop fighting slick southpaws and go back to hittable mexicans he can look good against.
He's not beating Rigo, by knockout or otherwise and Arum would likely have a heart attack if Donaire asked for a rematch. Donaire is an excellent fighter but it looked like the Rigo loss was still on his mind and he's second-guessing himself. Maybe he just needed to get back in the ring and fight through it, or maybe Rigo has taken something from him mentally.
Or maybe Darchinyan and Rigo are the only two legit top level opponents he has fought in recent memory. Donaire had been steered away from the most viable opposition, previous to fighting Rigo. He avoided the bantam tournament, and also avoided Moreno. Those guys were better than anybody he fought during that time frame. Donaire was being matched really soft.
Montiel was a top-level opponent and Nishioka was no joke. He could've fought better competition but he wasn't matched soft either.
I always thought his pound for pound ranking was greatly exaggerated for a few reasons: did anybody watch the Concepcion fight IN HIS PRIME? despite the scoring, he looked god awful and not terribly versatile. The Narvaez fight, beating on a small man all night, who immediately went back to super fly? He's best performances are against his best adversaries: the first Darchinyan fight and Montiel, so he CAN bring it hard, but he's never been as talented as the hype indicated, and comparisons with legitimate pound for pound guys like Hopkins, Floyd, and Pac always seemed extremely rushed in light of his actual in ring performances. The irony is that the one clean shot he landed on Rigo almost ended the night - I wish it would have, because Rigo really does lack one important aspect to his game: what happens when a guy can hit him?
If I remember the Concepcion fight correctly, Donaire was getting rocked frequently with clean flush shots.
Dude was out of shape and disinterested.I think Garcia is focussing strictly on Mikey and Rios.I have always thought that Garcia is a very over rated trainer and motivator.
If Donaire was really meant to be elite level, he wouldn't have been matched so softly pre Rigondeaux. Having Donaire fight soft opposition built up this aura of invincibility, when in reality it was the soft opposition making him look so good. Facts. At 118, he didn't fight any of the five best bantamweight opponents. Mares, Agbeko, Perez, Darchinyan, and Moreno. He instead fought Vazquez Jr(not that good), Mathebula(outside of a jab, not that good), Nishioka(brought out of retirement), Montiel(overrated midget), Sydorenko(old over the hill, limited, midget), Narvaez(midget), Arce(washed up over rated Mexican, midget). He didn't even look good against all of those guys. He had already beat Darchinyan, but Darchinyan is better than anybody he has faced recently besides Rigondeaux. Donaire fans were lulled into a false sense of security by the weak opposition Donaire was facing. Now some of you are surprised and claim he has fallen off. I disagree. He looked lackluster against Narvaez, and Mathebula. He looked lackluster against Nishioka as well. Rigondeaux and Darchinyan are the first two guys he has fought in years that had the ability to implement a gameplan, weren't scared, and had a punch. It makes me wonder, how fights with Mares, Agbeko, and Moreno would have played out, if Darchinyan gave him those types of problems. I didn't mention Perez, because I think Donaire would have beat Perez down.
