According to a Matthew Paras posting on the Scene. These huge numbers clearly indicate Donaire is surely way too big of a star to bother fighting that no-name Rigondeaux! And Rios most certainly is a big enough attraction to warrant an immediate fight with Pacquiao!
He is getting close to becoming a ppv image. Who should he fight next to be PPV worthy. I don't know who is, but certainly not Rigondeaux. Yes, many people want to see him fight Rigo but they are looking to fight for popularity. A fight with Rigo doesn't help. Mares-Moreno would be the ideal fight but as many have concluded, it's probably not likely due to promotional difficulties. It's looking like they might have to settle with Arce, not too good either....
What? These are weak numbers for an HBO card with a much hyped undercard bout. He's nowhere near becoming a PPV star.
I bet at least half were more interested in the Rios fight and what does ratings have to do with fighting a good opponent I hate the business of boxing, Donaire wont fight Rigo because hes not a huge draw but he is a great fighter with a belt highly ranked and highly respected among the boxing community I mean it was ok for Donaire to fight Nishioka who nobody ever heard of and was on the verge of retiring, but now he cant fight another talented guy with a small draw i dont get it...i mean unless Donaire goes to 126 and fights Gamboa or Salido or Chris John its kind of disappointing
When I first heard those numbers, my first thought was "Man these numbers are horrendous" but it's Donaire against Nishioka who is barely known in the moderate to hardcore boxing scene so I'm not really surprised. If the guys on this site barely know who Nishi is, how does anyone expect the casuals to know?
I wouldn't pay $30-$60 bucks to watch Donaire fight. I don't know anyone personally that would. Not even the Philipino's I know wouldn't pay to see him fight. The lighter weight fighters just don't draw that kind of attention from The casuals.
Right and poor Donaire also had to fight obscure Narvaez and obscure Mathebula in two of his previous three fights before this one. It's a shame there's no one else under his promotional banner who holds a belt (given his previous stated desire of unifying the division) and who has ever fought on US TV before. What a shame.
Like I said, people fight for popularity now, and popularity means money. It's all about money now. It's todays boxing. It doesn't make sense to the fans, but for the promoters and boxers it does. The fans are getting robbed, I know.
Bear in mind that Donaire brings the Phillipinos and a large amount of Americans, Rios brings Mexicans, and Nishioka would of attracted large amounts of Asians. Nationality plays as big a part in ratings as anything else.
And yeah, I believe you're right, the ratings had a lot to do with the Rios-Alvarado fight. Meaning, that now, it is very likely Pac-Rios will happen. That fight probably gained alot of Rios fans and would lure some PPV viewers should it happen. It might be a mismatch, but people will tune in to see another action packed match. I'm shaking my head as I don't like the match-up but I still would tune in to see some action.
And most were there for the undercard 7k seats sold As well but most for Rios Alvarado everyone was booing donaire fight... And where saying things like come on pacquiao fight, just hit him, it was funny.
