I simply don't get this justification at all. Rios-Alvarado was heavily promoted going in and we've been hearing about what a star in the making Donaire is for ages now. Broner has been on HBO fewer times than Donaire, Escobedo isn't exactly a household name in the US, and that fight had a weaker undercard and less network promotion yet it absolutely killed this one in terms of viewership.
The card was in direct competition with some great college football AND playoff baseball, including the New York Yankees. I figured it would bring about 1 million domestically. Also, the fight was broadcast in Japan and the venue sold out. Overall, not a bad night, but not a great night.
Alot of people are going to hate me for saying this but, the name is already there. It's Donaire, the problem is Donaire has stunk up the joint in his last 3 fights by not taking enough risks so people don't feel the urge to watch him. There's a reason why the Narvaez fight did similar ratings to this with no undercard and less promotion. Donaire was riding off the hype from the Montiel fight as the big knockout puncher. People wanted to see how good this guy is, and they did and clearly didn't like it. The casuals are not like the hardcores. They're not going to nitpick and say "Oh it's Narvaez fault the fight sucked" they're going to say this fight was boring and tune out. Trust me if Donaire was knocking guys out and having great performances he would be doing good ratings against anyone.
Broner is having great performances and he's a personality. He's what hot in the boxing world. Casual and hardcore fans alike have a reason to watch Broner.
Broner's broadcast was not up against prime time college football and the MLB playoffs. This card was on against the New York Yankees/Detroit Tigers ALCS. The Yankees are the biggest draw in baseball, one of the most recognizable teams in world wide sports. Also, Broner's card was not up against college football. Regional rivalries are huge in that sport and there were three prime time games. I'm not saying that Broner isn't a rising star, just that you can not make a direct comparison based on the viewership levels of these cards.
Yes Broner's fight came at a relative down time sports-wise, but that still doesn't change the fact that these are disappointing numbers. If you want to go for something more comparable, the replay of Chavez-Martinez on 9/22 also beat this card in the ratings despite going up against three network college football games including Michigan-Notre Dame and despite having been held a week prior (with complete videos of the fight left up on youtube during that week).
I switched on to watch Rios vs Alvarado Never bothered to watch any of Donaire's fights Although saying that, if he fights Rigondeaux I will tune in Rigo vs Donaire is the best case scenario for Donaire imo
Rios vs Alvarado is the reason for the numbers even being that high.. Kinda sucks, because I'm quite sure Rios will be Pac's next opponent now.. Donaire needs someone who will make him look good again.
I thought the exclamation points in my post indicated the sarcasm but I'll try to add a few :roll:s next time to avoid the confusion.
