Well thats a perfect example of why RIgo needs to fight capable fighters with different styles.. Because when he fights elit opponendts.. They are gonna do their homework and be capable of exposing a very talented but inexperienced fighter... No big deal that Rigo didnt knock him out, because even the greatest punchers get taken thhe distance,, but he almost lost and he was lucky it was Cordoba in their and not a few other elite guys around his weight class.

If you had seen and followed those guys', González and Garbey, fights in the amateurs, you would know better than to compare them to Rigondeaux. Whoever had those high expectations about them didn't know much about boxing.

Rigondeaux is living up the "the hype" as you say. Show me how he hasn't. When you talk about the Córdoba fight, please show me how Córdoba connected more than one meaningful punch (the KD one) and how winning a title in his 7th pro fight against a 37-2 guy is not living up to the hype.

Show how Rigondeaux almost lost, please. I really have doubts you saw that fight.

he was on his bicycle after he was knocked down by Cordoba. that fight became one of the most boring fights last year.

before that fight, i was telling all my friends that Rigo was going to demolish the ex champ (im a big Rigo fan), and i told them how great he was in the amateurs, how powerful and fast he is, etc.. but after the fight, my friends were all teasing me coz Rigo was back pedalling most of the rounds. i am still a fan, but not that big anymore.

And Córdoba... what did Córdoba do when Rigo was "on his bike"? How did Córdoba's performance almost won him the fight?

For having only 8 fights .. Sure hes doing good and is already world class.. But you guys are jumping the gun with some of the comments ive read so far,... Like saying hes one of the greatest punchers ever:patsch And being so sure he would beat NOnito....... I really do expect him to be elite one day... But right now you guys are speaking like if hes been whupping world beaters... Ive seen it to many times, havent any of you guys?

Aso for GOnzalez.. Well were you following boxing back then? Gonzalez was hyped up and beating Lewis,Bowe and all the other leading amatuers sounds like he had a helluva a amatuer career...

his agressiveness won some rounds, 1 judge even saw him winning the fight. im not saying that he won the fight, but he did make the gap close.

I wasn't following pro boxing, because I lived in Cuba at the time and it was impossible to have any access to pro boxing news, but you could tell that while González and Garbey were good, they were not outstanding.

Garbey was nothing like Ariel Hernández or Ángel Espinosa. And González beat Stevenson... when Stevenson was well on his way out, over-weighed and old, but he was never at the level of Savón, Stevenson or Balado.

I'd say Garbey and González were B fighters in Cuba, while the others I mentioned were A, Rigondeaux belongs in that group.

If Córdoba had been 1% aggressive, the fight wouldn't have been so boring. Córdoba was very passively and quietly "chasing" Rigondeaux, but he looked even worse than Rigondeaux, since he couldn't hit Rigondeaux even once after the KD, and Rigondeaux hit him a few more times after that. How a judge scored that fight for Córdoba is a mystery.

WHat about Juan Hernandez? At one time i remember some claiming him as one of or the best Cubano amatuer fighter.

Juan Hernández Sierra was very good, but he was too lanky and tall for my taste and I think he was kept under-weighed (67 kgs) because there was a void to fill in his weight class. He looked uninterested and tired at times, and failed to grab the gold medal (silver twice) at the 2 Olympic games against clearly inferior fighters.

No not that guy im talking about the guy that beat Chris Byrd for the gold back in 92 at Middleweight.

Ahh, that was Ariel Hernández, way better than Garbey. I mentioned him in a previous post. I remember the Byrd fight at 75 kgs.

Ariel was excellent, but he had huge problems making 75 kgs.
