Having watched their last few fights, I see this bout being pretty one sided in the end. I really like Montiel and I think he's a top quality fighter, but Donaire is extremely impressive. Fast, accurate shots from lots of different angles. He's a beautiful fighter to watch offensively and I don't think Montiel, or anyone else at the weight, can handle that sort of attack. I'd be really surprised if the fight turned out to be close, honestly, and I predict a late round stoppage for Donaire. I am looking forward to it though and I hope that after the bout, we get to see these two mix it up with Darchinyan, Agbeko, Mares etc.. It's a great division at the moment and there is a lot of really interesting fights to be made. Stylistically though, for this one fight, I think Donaire has a clear edge and I'm confident he will win. If he does, it shouldn't be a career ending loss for Montiel though because he's a great fighter too and will go on to more good things. Donaire KO10.
Same, it's a bad style matchup for Montiel especially. He slugs a lot and I feel Donaire will honestly devour him, people will be surprised when they see how one-sided this fight will be. There are a couple things I notice about Donaire: He's very very cool in the ring, very relaxed, in a way that I haven't seen in a fighter in ages. He looks bored in there most of the time, none of these guys can push him hard and he knows it. What would he fight like with a challenge in front of him? Mares will be a much bigger challenge for him(yes, I think he will dominate Agbeko)
Yeah, I think his composure is a serious asset. He doesn't get flustered, he moves in and out, unleashing good combos. He's a really good fighter to watch and will be very tough for Montiel. That fluidity with his movement and combinations, combined with his natural power is rare in boxing. Donaire could be a very special fighter in years to come. I also agree Mares will beat Agbeko. He's another top quality fighter. Him and Donaire would be a really, really good fight.
I disagree. Donaire has looked really impressive lately but I'm curious to see if he can maintain his aggression when in there with a tough, experienced, hard hitting fighter like Montiel. I hate to bring up the Conception fight but it looked like he lost a little enthusiasm and went defensive after getting hit and, although styles makes fights, I think Montiel will be able to find him. 60/40 fight for Donaire IMO
Donaire is going to break out this year. The guy is a wizard and I think he can adapt to whatever style opponent he faces. I expect him to continue to move up in weight and class and I envision titles for him at 122, 126, 130 and possibly beyond down the road.
I think the fight will be more competitive. Montiel is more than a slugger, he doesn't fight like the stereotypical Mexican. Check out the Hasegawa fight Montiel demonstrated some great boxing and athletic abilities. I'm not saying Montiel will beat Donaire (I'm still undecided), I just think this will be a very evenly matched fight to be honest. Not a fight to be missed for sure!!!
I've always liked Donaire, moving up in weight like that would be great. But a part of me just questions whether or not his chin will hold up and if he'll actually carry the pop that he has. If he manages both, then he'll def be something special.
People will be brought back to reality on Feb 19th, if they actually think Donaire is gonna "easily" beat or "destroy" Montiel...Im not saying Montiel will win, its a pick'em fight for me, and its gonna be a tough fight for both. For the sake of boxing, you all should hope Montiel wins, as Donaire has already said he's interested in moving up and fighting Vazquez jr in a weak ass 122 division. Im pretty sure Donaire will have no interest in staying at 118 if he beats Montiel, as he will just keep moving up, and im quite sure Montiel will fight the winner of the bantam tourney if he beats Donaire. WAR MONTIEL!!!
I'm curious to see what strategy Mares would use against a guy like Donaire. I've seen two different versions, the one who boxes on his toes(quite competently i might add) and the mexican bang-bang body-head combination puncher which I think is his typical style. Mixing it up is probably a terrible idea though, having seen what he did to Sidorenko. I'm almost sad that Mares will take on Donaire, because I feel like he'll lose and it'll derail him from getting the credit he deserves, but it has to be done and it'd be a great fight.
It would be Donaire's speed if anything that would make the diffrence here, if Donaire wins. If Montiel wins, it would be his power making the diffrence IMO.
while I would definitely like to see Donaire stick around 118 and fight the winner, it's probably out of his control. If Mares wins his fight, then there is the huge obstacle of Top Rank and GBP dealing with each other. So he probably would move up right away. I've been wanting to see Donaire-Vazquez for awhile now anyway. And he should continue to move up if he keeps winning. There really shouldn't be any issue with that.
