Donald Curry was an excellent counter puncher …he was also a great at infighting …he’s better than Errol Spence
I agree …Donald Curry probably would have won an Olympic gold medal in 1980 ,if the United States hadn’t boycotted….and even in his loss to Mike Mccallum , you can see he’s an extremely skilled fighter
I didn't mention Canelo to make a comparison to Curry. I mentioned Canelo because he is known for having a strong chin and Floyd was able to keep him honest. Mosley is known for a strong chin and gave Floyd credit for his power. Basically said he had to be careful when he attacked because he respected what was coming back. I have seen all of those fights (Ali vs Patterson is fuzzy to me because I haven't watched in years) but I disagree with your conclusion somewhat. Leonard vs Benitez for example, IMO was a situation where Benitez could not adjust to the speed of Leonard. Benitez was gun shy because of the speed and power Leonard had coming back. I think it was that more so than Leonard's jab. When I say basic I'm talking about how he sets up his offense. He does not use many feints and probes. Go and watch him again. He is very similar to Spence in that regard. The speed and power does not matter anywhere near as much when the set up isn't there. Floyd would see that in a hypothetical matchup. A fighter NEEDS those things to have success against Floyd and Curry did not have that at a high level at his disposal. I'm serious when I say go and watch him again. Pick ANY fight. Watch his offense. Watch how many different looks he gives his opponents to set up his offense.
Spence is great at infighting too. I agree Curry is a better counter puncher. Curry is probably a better fighter because he is more athletic. But they do have similar styles. I'm not here acting like Curry couldn't fight. Hell Spence could fight too. I'm just responding to the thread title. I don't believe a fighter with that style would beat Floyd.
This is a tough one although on the surface it doesn’t look that way because Mayweather’s achievements far outweigh Curry’s. The thing is for 3 or 4 years in the mid 80’s Curry simply looked lethal I think that version is a problem for most. He was like a coiled spring out of that front foot high guard with rapid hand speed and genuine power, the left hook that rendered McCrory helpless you barely saw, he was a very intimidating presence. Pretty Boy would need to be on the top of his game here and everything in the toolbox would need to be on show here especially the footwork as if you could fault Curry he wasn’t exactly fleet of foot. Mayweather’s all round skill set may see him to a a hard fought decision here but it would be no surprise if he caught some flack and was stopped.
I never understood what happened to Donald Curry but there was a four year window when he was probably the best fighter P4P in the world .. His speed, power and skill were exceptional ... his fall from grace starting with Honeygan to this day shocks me ...
Mayweather never fought GGG or Lara. I think you've conflated Canelo's controversial wins over those two with gifts you're claiming Mayweather was given.
The fight would have to be in Vegas too, so Floyd only had to be standing at the final bell to get decision
Thought this site got better. He ducked GGG a fighter two divisions above him.? I’ll try this again in a couple of months.
Not at all Floyd really lost to Maidana 1 Castillo 1 Lara Judah by dq Ortiz by dq Pacquaio by fight made a No Contest
