"Donald Curry vs. Nino LaRocca" from 1984.

    Folks,

    I was so sold on Nino LaRocca back in the early 1980s. He is perhaps the first European fighter that had me convinced he was the hot ticket and real deal at 147 pounds. Christ, going into his '84 WBA title shot against Donald Curry from Texas, Nino LaRocca had over 50 wins with a mere loss to Giles Ebilia from a cut... However, as fate would have it, Nino LaRocca was exposed as over-hyped by the primed 1984 version of Donald Curry...

    Anyway, I taped the fight in 1984 and I recently located it for review... Donald Curry romped Nino LaRocca's ass hard for a 6th rds TKO....

    Needless to say, Nino LaRocca's career was never the same and Donald Curry would only remain hot for another two yrs before getting had by Lloyd Honeyghan....

    Still, Curry was at the height of his boxing powers when he stopped LaRocca in Monte Carlo in Sept. '84.....

    "Curry-LaRocca" appears to be a forgotten gem nowadays...

    In fact, I am transfering this fight to a more modern tape since my master copy is 26 yrs old...

    Yea, I was also iumpressed with Nino, thought he'd beat Curry. He was very good boxer, slick, fast, combinations, and some good wins also. Even though he didn't beat the big boys, he did very well.

    LaRocca finished in 1989 / '90 by losing to Tony Fernandez and Louie Garcia.... He was only age 31 when he called it quits.... I wonder what ever became of LaRocca once he walked away from the ring... Is he doing well in his native Italy?

    I remember Curry's very next fight because it was in my home town (Birmingham UK) against Colin Jones, i was only about 13 at the time and used to spend all my pocket money on the ring and boxing news, i begged my dad to take me to the fight but alas i had to make do with watching Curry mess up Jones face for 4 rounds until the doctor did him a favor and pulled him out.

    Jones gave McCrory fits in 1983 two times, but was easy pickens for Curry in '85... Curry KO 4 Jones...

    Oh Billy! You opened up a nasty wound! I was sooo sold on "The Italian Ali" After that masterful performance against Pete Ranzany. That is still one of the best boxing exhibitions, I have ever seen. Brilliant.

    I thought LaRocca was the man prior to his fight with Curry... I wish some of his earlier fights were on USA TV....

    I have the tape---Somewhere..... But Jones' nose was cut and perhaps broken pretty bad within them 4 rds, as well.... Curry was methodically chopping Jones up....

    I don't think Larocca was a complete fraud and would definitely have matched up better against McCrory. The thing with Curry was that he was as fast as Larocca, and once the speed was neutralized after a couple rounds he began to expose Larocca's technical flaws. This is an underrated dismantling IMO. Larocca came apart pretty quickly after Curry started sharpshooting him.

    Very Bad Match-up for Nino at that time.
    Donald Curry was like 'rolling thunder'.

    He could have been successful in doing exactly what he had been prior to this fight,
    picking apart the lower section of the Welterweight Division.

    The guy looked great in dismantling a very good Bobby Joe Young.

    If Cuevas had gotten the nod over Jun Sok Hwang in thier close fight( despite getting the knockdown). Cuevas- Curry was in the bag. would've been an interesting fight.
