Curry at his best, is just a shade too much for Oscar. Donald wins a close one over De La Hoya by UD in 12.
If De Lahoya comes up against the Don Curry of 83 - 85, he's in big trouble. I had the utter privilege of seeing him close up as he used our gym in Birmingham to finish his training for his defence against Colin Jones. I loved Jones, who also used our gym, and his manager, Eddie Thomas but I simply couldn't see how Colin could win. Curry was like an eel. He stood right in front of you with that high guard and slipped and blocked everything. He did a couple of rounds with British Light Welterweight Champion, Lloyd Christie. I used to catch the train home with Lloyd and he told me that he was sure he'd hit Curry until the last blink of an eye. Don was a big Welter and it was the weight that finally beat him, (No disrespect to a splendidly feisty Lloyd Honeyghan) and he could really punch - Who knocked Milton McCrory spark out ? For all Oscar's brilliance and the power of his left hook, he is a growing Lightweight and Curry would stand on top of him and dominate him. I know that De Lahoya was more talented and faster than Colin Jones but watch how Curry slips or blocks Colin's left and look at the damage his punches did. Due to his divorce, Curry went on too long, selling his name and reputation and getting banged out so now he is not seen as all that. Oscar goes down heroically in the eighth.
