When I think of Donovan Ruddock, there's a few things that come to mind. An incredible puncher, if not lacking a real dominant right hand. Moreover, he had two grueling battles with Mike Tyson, his stock rose as a result, and then there's that incredible act of will against Tommy Morrison. He thought he had Morrison hurt, he was surely winning the fight, and then he gets caught by an unbelievable left hook and goes down as if someone just shot him with a double-barrel shotgun at close range. I'll never know how, but he got up.

Larry Holmes was under no question the greater Heavyweight and should be remembered as being one of the outstanding talents of the 80s. It was never more apparent than when he took on Ernie Shavers, one of the hardest hitting fighters that ever lived. Although winning the fight, Holmes would get caught with a huge right hand that put him down, and like Ruddock, it looked certain that he'd take a 10 count. For some strange reason, probably something that makes a champion, Holmes got up, finished the fight and got a decision. Incredible.

Which act of will is most impressive to you? Although Holmes would get up and finish the fight, and of course Morrison would soon get a stoppage victory, I still believe Donovan had no business getting up or even being conscious after that shot. Holmes went down hard, but Donovan looked limp, check his left leg on the slow-mo replay. It looked over.

I believe hitting the canvas brought Ruddock back to consciousness. He was out going down, and hit the canvas harder than any fighter Ive seen. I dont know if thats the case, but youve seen people come back to when they get smacked in the face, maybe thats what happen, but Ruddock had no life in him going down, its like someone dropped a mannequin out of a building.

Both impressive displays of heart and recovery, I'd say probably on par.

I think both of them were woken up by the canvas.

About Ruddock, it was not the only time he went down violently and got right back up as if it was nothing. For whatever reason he had a tendency to go down as if he was shot.

Had he been given the chance to finish the round, he could have probably come back from the knockdown. Morrison was spent.

Seems an effective method but I'll stick to my obnoxious cellphone ringtone, thanks. :scaredas:

Unrelated but in other combat sports such as mixed martial arts you see fighters being knocked out cold and woken up by follow-up punches on the ground. In most of those cases the fighter will complain that he was never knocked out in the first place.

Yes, I'll very much stick with my cellphone as well instead of hitting the canvas or being beaten back to consciousness.

Ruddock was past his prime and had been fighting infrequently up to that point. Holmes was in his prime and active. I think Ruddock deserved more credit.

Holmes stopped Shavers in the fight in which he was dropped. He won a wide decision in heir first fight.

As far as which is more impressive, I don't know. They were both impressive. Holmes was hammered hard from a great right hand, Ruddock looked dead when he was dropped, then the canvas seemed to awake him, and I did not agree with the stoppage later in the round.

Very tough choice...I'll take Ruddock's inhuman recovery from the knockdown, just because most fawn over Larry's recovery. (Which is justified.)
Ruddock's was at least as impressive, if not more so.

It's unbelievable because the camera follows Morrison, and you expect it to cut to Ruddock laying on the ground catching z's but instead he's up at the count of three and you're just like, what the hell!?

After that Shavers bomb Larry had no right to get up, so I go with Holmes

Ruddock vs Smith was almost as impressive, because Ruddock was hit flush on the chin with a huge right from Bonecrusher, went down like a ton of bricks and just busted out laughing.

I'll try and get this fight uploaded.
