Showtime does not pay the fighters GBP does. Excerpt from Boston Herald article: What last night’s bout will ultimately gross remains to be seen, but one thing was clear to Schaefer: $60 million in checks were to be distributed by the Nevada State Athletic Commission to all the fighters on the card because their purses have to be paid immediately even though the pay-per-view money will take months to come in. As the fight’s promoter, De La Hoya’s company had to deposit the full $60 million into an account before the fight so the checks could be distributed. Mayweather, for example, left with one piece of paper carrying the number $41 million (he was actually guaranteed $41.5 million but purchased $500,000 worth of tickets himself) on it. Alvarez left with a less hefty but no less fruitful $12.5 million check, give or take. - See more at: http://bostonherald.com/sports/other/boxing/2013/09/numbers_add_up_on_ppv#sthash.g4f1bBAG.dpuf
It's also to these networks' advantage to show as little actual income as possible for tax purposes. I follow the movie business a little bit, and if there's anything entertainment guys know how to do, it's to tell you (and more importantly, the IRS) they lost money on a billion dollar event. I'll believe Showtime's actually losing money when they slash their boxing budget. Until then, I'd take all these second hand reports with a grain of salt.
Showtime takes 50%. 65 million never touches the promoters hand. So now you got 65 +20 from gate +10 mill from other sources. 95 million. If 12 goes to alvarez and 82 goes to floyd how does the promoter who fronted 10 mill just for the 10 city tour even make money? Doesn't add up, they must be exaggerating numbers or paydays
There is simply no way a casual fan can follow the money for a complex superfight where the parties involved are private entities. We're not going to see it reported on a 10-K broken down line by line, and even if we did, that's where the creative accounting just gets started. The goal of promoters is to brag about huge revenue and show no profit to keep the tax man off their backs. I know it's fun to project these sorts of things, but it's impossible to do accurately.
