....but why is it that when certain boxings use footwork and ring generalship..its called Running...I thought when you do that, that was a certain part of boxing. Now i saw pac vs cotto and what he did on the back end, to me looked like running..Yet i see other boxers who dont stand in one place to get hit but are effectively fighting and they are called runners... Im just saying...
why do people think that ring generalship can only be done on the back foot. You can move forward and be agressive with great ring generalship too.
I dont think that it can only be done that way but i do agree with your statement....as well as moving backwards and laterally...
i know what im saying is that you have boxers that can move forward be allusive and that ring generalship. (Pac/Mosely) Backwards which can be ring generalship if you are fighting (PBF) I cant remember other fighters off the top of my head that went backwards. Laterally which is ring generalship (PBF does this alot too) Now of course you know floyd is accused of running.... As far as the pocket...I agree with what you but i dont see anything wrong with getting out of the pocket if you dont want to fight up close. I also hate when people give boxers **** for potshotting and moving, (considered running) Thats stupid. If thats what it takes to win then why do something else. If you dont want him potshotting and moving, cut off the ring, use your slips etc... If you cant do that then you need to tighten your skills in that area. Potshotting is only gonna get you frustrated and then make you loose your discipline and now you are about to get assaulted or picked like a booger... sounds like a good plan if you are undisciplined enough for it to work.
I never give a boxer **** for running. The important thing is to win the fight. But people gotta realise that sometimes a boxer is moving backwards the whole time but still getting tagged and touched up while he's doing it. I had Froch beating Dirrell.
watch macho camacho early in his career and sugar ray leonard, what they did was special, great movement, hand speed. But what some boxers do nowadays is running, see dlh against tito. That wasnt boxing that was just a boxer scared to trade shots so he ran, there's a difference between the two. :hat
Examples of good ring generalship, footwork, boxing skills..... where they were used hand in hand with good, effective offense and make a beautiful boxing lesson together - Mayweather vs Corrales - Mayweather vs Gatti - Ward vs Kessler (outside of headbutts) - Bradley vs Peterson - Hopkins vs Pavlik - Vargas vs Campas - Hoya vs Vargas - Jones vs Ruiz among many others.... However, just using your legs to stay away from your opponent and pot shotting them, while dropping offense and presence is not the 'essense of boxing' that so many 'purists' want to think. Examples that i consider too extreme Haye - Valuev (somewhat understandable i suppose, valuev is huge... but its still an example) Dirrell - Froch (i think dirrell did a lot of good in that fight, but he also 'ran' plenty too) and all the other fights that come into peoples minds when they think of 'running' (to be honest, i cant really think of many mayweather fights that really fit the bill for me, i dont really know why hes called gayrunner... one performence shouldnt taint a career and i think he gets that flack for the baldomir fight) but anyways, to me personally.... boxing is boxing, yet your going to have extremes in each direction. Its however a fighter uses boxing (the art of offense and defence with your fists) to the most effective to THEM, is what is right FOR THEM. But this 'only THIS METHOD is PURE boxing' is such bull**** lol.... Mayorga is never going to be like spinks, and spinks can never in a million years fight like mayorga.... neather one, to me, is 'more of what boxing is', no.... one just has an offensive, wild extreme and the other has a more skilled, defensive extreme, and certain people will appreciate one style over the other. I can understand how when a fighter takes the defensive, and 'safe' side to the extreme, that many fans think its excessive, and they get critisised for it. IMO, good footwork and ring generalship is not an excuse to put on a boring performence, because to me, good GOOD boxing is the right mix of everything, offense and defense... theres ring generalship that allows you to 'stay away' from your opponent and all that, and then theres ring generalship that allows you to destroy your enemy For example.... early in the vargas vs quartey fight, vargas had to actually box going backwards and allow ike to try and throw that jab TO HIM, instead of vargas walking INTO the jab, and when he did that Ikes jabs effectiveness went down, and he then was walking into Vargas shots, who would unload a combo and go back to moving Just using your legs to stay out of range of your opponent, and then pot shot him here and there, to me is not exactly something to be highly praised, and just throwing out that its 'good footwork' or 'ring generalship' doesnt change that to me. Like i said, some use ring generalship to stay away, some use it to set traps and dissect their opponents, i appreciate the latter and it shouldnt be a wonder as to why people critic the former. JUST IMO
well, pac beat the hell out of cotto. it's hard to call it running when the guy is laying down an ass-whooping. i think as a general rule, if the guy is landing good quality punches while moving laterally or even away, then i don't think it can be called running. if he never stops to throw anything meaningful, and he is in full retreat, then that's running.
I think people label you with the "running tag" when you dont press your advantage even when your in full control of a fight, also when your output is not that great but your landing the cleaner punches. I think this describes Mayweather in a nutshell, not to say its not a smart way to fight or that he runs. Mayweather makes Whitaker look like Chavez in terms of aggressiveness though. I think you can fight this way and still maintain a degree of excitement but you have to "close like a Champion and put an exclamation mark on your performance" thats what people respect.
