I'm currently devising a plan for a dissertation, focused on doping and PEDS in boxing. I was wondering if anybody on here knows of any books or journals that are in any way at all related, or to sport in general. And before you say it, I have trawled through the library! Thanks.
I don't know of any books or journals personally. However, I could suggest specific cases from where you could get a lot of information: 1. BALCO Scandal 2. Ángel Guillermo Heredia Hernández a.k.a. Ángel Heredia and Memo (Ángel Guillermo Heredia Hernández). He has a Wikipedia page, although it does give the basics it is not 100% accurate so please do not rely on it and do further research. 3. Clenbuterol in Mexican beef and related failed drugs tests, Canelo Alverez being the most prominent. You could look into the levels detected and academically assert whether it is likely from tainted meat or a just too high levels for that to be realistically possible. https://www.usada.org/clenbuterol-and-meat-contamination/ https://www.reuters.com/article/us-soccer-concacaf-mexico-doping/mexico-blames-tainted-meat-after-soccer-players-fail-dope-test-idUSTRE75918A20110610 I hope there are books or journals on the matter, if not you may just have to read online news articles and gather as much information as possible, and then try to verify what you found. The USADA website has a lot of information and they have a an email function so maybe you can email questions etc. I wish you good luck.
Regarding Heredia, there's a docu on youtube by German tv that was about Heredia. Mexico is like THE place to buy PEDs. You can buy whatever you want prescription or not over the counter and the German reporters dig into that pretty good. Also, there was a story by promoter who fixed fights, sometimes doped fights, etc. And the Mia St. John story among all the known stories like Fluid Jr. getting retroactive TUEs. Refer to Thomas Hauser's article on that. Maybe look into the difference between VADA and USADA/WADA. VADA employs the CIR test which detects synthetic steroids, whereas USADA/WADA employs T:E ratios. The CIR test absolutely detects all steroids, where the T:E ratio threshold allows one to ACTUALLY use steroids as long as you stay under that threshold. These are two very different philodophies when it comes to what constitutes clean. There's a ton of unscrupulous **** with USADA/WADA so that all plays into their choice to use ratios. https://joezauner.wordpress.com/2012/10/05/the-dope-on-usada/ That test would be the CIR test which was invented by Don Catlin who when he retired from the UCLA Olympics Lab which he built, chose to move to VADA instead of USADA.
Thanks for replies. I'm edging closer towards a hypothesis something along the lines of: 'why anti-doping in boxing isn't credible, considering governing bodies and commissions' involvement/stance.' The trouble with this sort of topic is that there really isn't that much academic material out there to collectively test my proposed hypothesis. Tricky one.
Mate when all is done PM the dissertation, sounds like an interesting subject. What do you study? Guessing sports science.
This content is protected 4020 Schiff Drive Las Vegas, NV 89103 (616) 337-5481 ^^^ is the hotbed of PED use in professional sports. Just call and ask anyone for an interview. If you want to learn about cycling and illegal IV use, ask for Floyd Joy Sinclair.
Follow the money. Look at who is paying for the testing. And be careful of the above hypothesis, WBC has just introduced a policy on drugs that is pretty interesting. You should definitely look into this way more before you put your finger on an angle.
Will be completed by May next year, but I will post a link to it on here for anyone who wants to read and will PM to you too. I study Sports Journalism, but I'm trying to steer away from focusing my dissertation on something involved with the industry. As I can choose what to focus on, it's a no brainer for me to focus on the thing that annoys me most in the sport - the corruption. Trouble is, it's too vague to cover as a whole topic, I'm having to narrow it down to an area hence looking at doping.
Interesting area of focus, but again, I doubt there is much out there academically for me to use in support of a hypothesis. It may be that cost of drug testing in SPORT rather than just boxing would open up several avenues with lots of information available to support. Re WBC policy, I'll have a look - thanks. Trouble is, I have my own opinion on doping and corruption in boxing like all of us on here, yet there is nothing to back it up. I'll get there in the end!
Check out The Olympic doctor Exum Wade who exposed American doping from the 80’s and 90’s, the American Olympic committee pretty much let dopers off the hook to allow them to compete and win medals. If you're doing a dissertation or research project, Google Books and Google Scholar are always a good place to start. They can make it a lot easier to find any books or published papers that may be useful. Often any books/articles you find will also reference other publications which also may prove helpful. It's also worth the checking out the official websites for the likes of WADA etc... Considering your hypothesis, I would recommend also considering looking for press releases from commissions and any released meeting minutes.
This article should be of interest to you. https://heinonline.org/HOL/Page?handle=hein.journals/scal87&div=12&g_sent=1&casa_token=QW2bOC3QStUAAAAA:m8PKKok0QaMNmVkjyusvibHipiuPqGazl8GewSoopaG2RBuc443odAqY9eecJszQlx13i0rF9A&collection=journals If you can't access it I can send you a .pdf
One question you might be able to gather data on is: "when a fighter tests positive, does the length of punishment correlate with the fight purse".
