You're going to need to provide specific examples from specific posters. Otherwise, your thread is pointless. I've seen people give props to and trash both fighters.
Ok lol but this will take time to search. First example i will look for is how many call calzaghe a regional fighter as an insult yet do not even mention it about ward.
Robertv77 "Joe remained a regional fighter out of fear of having his ass tore open" yet regards Ward ( who so far is a regional fighter) as "Ward has been one of the best fighters in the world for a couple of years now and everyone will begin to recognize this fact in the next 18 months". Takes to long to do this so im gonna leave it at this and just agreee to disagree.
This guy is not criticising for being a regional fighter, he's saying Calzaghe stayed a regional fighter because he wasn't good enough to compete at the world level. His talent level is what is being questioned there. I'm not saying this is a valid criticism, but there is no double standard there.
You are correct that some are overplaying Ward right now. Some are also being too critical... depends on which threads you read and what side of that argument you are on. Myself, I think Ward is an excellent talent, with a craftiness and adaptablity that is unusual for such a young fighter. He can go on to do some very, very good things in the future. To me the difference between him and Calzaghe is simply, the age. Ward has the vast majority of his career ahead of him. There is no reason not to give him the benefit of the doubt that he will end up facing the best available competition to him. Bear in mind that Ward is still relatively green and that he didn't have a choice in fighting Green. If Allan Green ends up being one of Ward's best wins(assuming Green stays true to his current form, kind of sucking), but has an atg style record and accomplishment resume, it will be a disappointment and he will deserve whatever criticism he gets. It's a little early to be comparing (for better or worse) Calzaghe and Ward as the book on Ward is, as of now, unwritten.
Yeah he probably is, But you must know that Pudwell was a late sub and previous title challenger, so ill say think as well
Great post! Not much of a Calzaghe fan - some say he dodged REAL competition to maintain his record. But you also have to look to see who was in the Supermids at the time - no much at all! Not compared to now. But with his performance with what competition was available, i'd say he was a great fighter. Unfortunately, Ward has a chance to rise higher than Joe BECAUSE of the level of competition available. There is one fighter that can be used as a base comparison, Mikkel Kessler. Andre dominated him, Joe not so much. But Joe did take Mikkel at his prime i'd think. Joe fought both Bhop and RJJ, both out of their prime, and i dont think Bhop had his current trainer now. Ward both suffers and is elevated by his "high expectations" because of his boxing pedigree, caused by the love & hate of this element. The best thing is to hope for the best and give him time and chance to establish his greatness, or not....
What level of competition Kessler the next highest rated SMW Joe beat when undefeated Dirrell lost to Froch and his only big win is a DQ victory over a small MW champ whos big win is? Froch lost to Kessler AA has no real SMW resume other than a KO victory over Taylor coming off a KO Green hasnt beaten anyone of note Ward may go on to be special (we dont know and cant class him as yet) but those other guys besides Kessler dont even compare with Mitchell on Calzaghes resume and Green is about the same level as Sheika and done less than Mkertchyan, Dirrell has done less than Veit, AA as a SMW less than Reid,
Glen Johnson looms large..........he is like amnesia to JC fans. "Well he would have beat him easy anyway so lets move on, nothing to see here"............Like ANYONE has ever beaten Johnson easy. Besides a prime Hopkins at middleweight.
