Before i start i am in no way diminishing Marvin Hagler, i rate him as the greatest MW of all time. I find that there are alot of double standards for old/past fighters, fighters of yesterday always get praise that fighters of today get stick over. My argument here is why does Hopkins not get the credit for beating Trinidad, yet Hagler gets it for beating Hearns?
I give them both credit. Tito had just massacred Joppy, was undefeated and looked unstoppable - I think it was a fantastic victory for Hopkins.
Hearns nearly always looked ripped he was a freak. Titto came in a pound heavier the previous fight TKO 5 over Joppy. 2 Pounds lighter in his W over Vargas.
This is a point I have mentioned numerous times myself. Hopkins is berated for beating smaller men in Tito, De La Hoya and Wright. Yet Hagler's wins over Duran and Hearns and Monzon's wins over Griffith and Napoles seem to be given a pass without comment. And this is despite the fact Hopkins went up to light heavyweight successfully unlike Hagler and Monzon and proved he could beat bigger men as well as men at his own weight.
Hopkins spent his entire career beating up on smaller opponents Haggles spent his entire career beating the **** out of everyone
What has aesthetics got to do with ability? Hearns best weight was at welter or light middle, no matter how his body looked.
who is trinidad and who is hearns, besides, you can't compare hopkins to hagler, not just because they fought differently - hagler is way above hopkins and time/era is nothing to do with that
I think both of them were great, complete fighters, but Hagler beat better middleweight opposition than Hopkins. Hagler's most famous fights were against smaller opponents, but Hagler fought his share of good MWs as well.
Read the thread you fuk!ng idiot when did i say Hopkins was better than Hagler or compare him to Hagler, there is always one Nob ed who tries to be clever so what if i spelt the names wrong this is a boxing forum not a fuk!ng english class.
Depends on the generation...My Grandfather laughed at Roy Jones even being considered as an ATG and believed Ali was the greatest HW who ever lived by a mile...I grew up with Tyson and believe the young version could beat any HW in history...My friend who grew up with Foreman believes he was truly the greatest HW of all time (Ali just got lucky)... I believe Hopkins would give any MW of any era a fight....
Yeah, he still looked chubby at 160. That said, they are both good wins. I'm not one of those who claim "Hopkins just beat former Welterweights" like many do. But I do think Hagler's win is WAAY more meaningful.
