Doug Fischer - Cotto arguably has a better shot now than in 2007

    From his mailbag:

I’m also looking forward to Mayweather-Cotto more than Pacquiao-Bradley. (Of course, I’d be lying if I said Mayweather-Cotto is the event I anticipate the most on Cinco de Mayo weekend – that “honor” goes to The Avengers movie – but the fight is a close second.)

I understand what you’re saying about Mayweather’s choice to take on Cotto now rather than back in 2007 or 2008, before Cotto’s debilitating first bout withMargarito, but I only half-agree. Yes, the young, undefeated version of Cotto was a true wrecking machine, especially at 147 pounds where he seemed to take a punch better than he did at junior welterweight. But the Evangelista Cotto-instilled stance he had at the time was too squared up and his aggressive style was tailor made for a pin-point punching surgeon like Mayweather. I’m not saying that Mayweather would have had an easy time with Cotto back then, but I do believe that the technical improvements that Emanuel Steward and Pedro Diaz have brought to Cotto’s game will make it harder for Floyd to blast him with flush shots and help him crack the undefeated American’s vaunted defense. I also think being able to come in at 154 pounds will benefit Cotto.

I agree to an extent. Cotto used to put his head past his front foot and wasn't as dimensional as he is now. Although Mayweather's style has changed as well, and I think his increased strength and more offensive style makes Cotto even more vulnerable than he would have been back in 2007-2008 had Mayweather tried to walk him down. Maybe not, though. Diaz seems to be working with Cotto on offsetting Mayweather's pressure.

We'll see...I'd like to think of a scenario where Cotto wins and in my mind I can see it, but in reality, Cotto's defensive liabilities, stamina problems, and increased sloppiness late in fights probably spells an accuracy clinic for Mayweather.

Dougie is the man but he's wrong! Cotto was a cyborg in 2007... A seek and destroy bad ass!

To the TS: Quit trying to hype up Cotto because your Boy toy is fighting him next!

Well if he's better now than he was in 2007, we'll just see what happens and how he deals with it. I think if Cotto wins this fight, I believe everyone is gonna switch there tone and say he's better now than he was in 2007 but if Mayweather was to win, than they'll stick with him being better in 2007, it has to do with Pacquaio vs. Mayweather accomplishments when judging there resumes. This is why there's a big debate if he's better now or in 2007, because Pacquaio already beat him and Mayweather is about to fight him.

Yeah after getting beaten by Manny and physically batter and forced to quit by Margo the first time, an objective person is supposed to believe that now he is better? Doug Fischer is an idiot.

On a technical level Cotto is a better fighter than he was in 2007, Manny & Pedro have fixed a good amount of technical problems, but he used to be a hungry, body punching machine. He lacks the fire he used to have.

Still, any version of Cotto loses to May.

I agree with the first half. Cotto was less dimensional and more square, but there weren't the same questions surrounding his durability and relentlessness.

If Cotto gets hit enough to lose the rounds big, it won't be because his defense is that bad, but because Floyd's offense is that good. What he pulled off in a high-energy gameplan against Margarito suggests his conditioning has greatly improved in terms of conditioning.

Like the TS, I only half-agree with giving either version of Miguel the edge over the other.

If so, I don't think Mayweather would be taking the fight. Unless, of course, Mayweather has always considered Cotto to not have a shot.

Styles make fights, but so do mentalities. An undefeated Cotto was relentless and stood up to brutal shots from Mosley. Yes, Mayweather is more accurate, but if Mosley couldn't put Cotto down, I doubt Mayweather would have.

It would have been the type of fight Mayweather never took: a genuine test against a fighter who doesn't know how to lose.

not really your the idiot, he mentions the training improvements which took place after these 2 fights moron. He battered Margo in the second fight while taking very little damage the second time around.

He can improve his training all he wants, he is older and more shop worn than he was in 2007 from the plaster beating and the prolonged beating from Manny.

You think the Cotto - Margo 2 fight was a testament to how good Cotto is, I disagree. While Cotto clearly won, 1 eyed Margo still was able exert pressure on him and was starting to land regularly on him. Not a good look in my opinion for someone who is supposed to be elite at 154, especially seeing how Margo fought at 154 against Roberto Garcia.

Like I said, there is no way you can objectively claim Cotto is better now than he was in his physical prime.
