I believe the eight-month suspension is around the usual length of time for a first-time offender in the state of Nevada (where Ortiz was pinched for nandrolone after blasting Lateef Kayode in one round last September). I wouldn’t call it “lenient.” Lenient is the three-month suspension that the NSAC handed Mickey Bey (by a 3-2 vote) after the Money Team fighter iced poor Robert Rodriguez in February 2013 and then tested positive for elevated testosterone levels (a T/E ratio greater than 30-1, in fact, second highest in Nevada history). I guess Mickey had a note from his doctor. (Ya think that doctor was part of The Medical Team, along with the two commissioners that voted against suspending Bey?) Personally, I think boxing commissions in the U.S. should take a page from the British Boxing Board of Control and UKAD (UK Anti-Doping) and ban boxers who fail drug tests for two years as they did with heavyweight prospect Dillian Whyte in 2012. Whyte, who tested positive for a banned stimulant methylhexaneamine (MHA), claimed that he unknowingly ingested it with a legal sports/nutritional supplement (which had been pulled from shelves in the UK just a few weeks before his fight and subsequent failed drug test). He stated his case in an appeal to the BBBC, but a special tribunal rejected the appeal even though they believed him. They basically told Whyte: “Dude, you need to read the ingredients of anything you put into your body – especially sports drinks and nutritional supplements. A five-minute Google search could have spared you this two-year suspension.”

Yep, we've seen as low as 3 month bans in the US, even with multiple offenders, wich is effectively no ban at all for most high level boxers.

European boxers usually get lengthy bans when caught, just like athletes from other sports. It's insane how low bans have been in boxing thus far, and how some fans even act like it's some minor offence.

Dougie often points to where it hurts in US boxing.

It's a joke in the USA because of the lack of moral fibre in American culture. In the UK we idolise and look up to hard-working, nice gentlemen. American culture however glorifies the wife beaters, the wannabe gangsters and the drugs cheats.

Americans love their drugs cheats. Using PEDs to succeed in sport is the American way. Hard work, practice and dedication is the British way.

He didn't. He's no Roid Jones, Fraud Mayweather or James Foney. He doesn't take PEDs.

Lifetime ban if caught no second chances is the only way forward. But that's a pipe dream. ****ty 3...6...9 month bans lol what a joke. It's been a part of US sports for what? 30 plus years? It ain't going anywhere.

Something that once caused outrage and scandal now comes as no surprise. You wonder how much of a normality it will be in another 30 years.

I know a UK based pro boxer who says he was never tested until he won the British title. He had about 15 fights won prize fighter and still was not tested.

I have no agenda, you meanwhile want to get upset with any poster who mentions a fact that doesn't make Yanks look good. Why do you comment on threads and never tackle the subject. Do you agree with Dougie or not, stay puft?

I've always had the stance that testing and punishment needs to be more severe. But I don't tie it to a nation, and neither should you. Boxing needs an international commission with strict policies and procedures that everyone, from any country, has to follow.
