I am a mike tyson fan and have seen every fight many times and imo the tyson of tokyo was actually better than the one who knocked out bruno the year before. Tyson looked even worse against bruno in 89 than he did in his loss against douglas. Compared to the bruno fight he looked faster, more fluid and "springier"(people who've watched tyson know what i mean) which, along with the "bouncy" footwork is what you want to look for in tyson when he's good.

No tyson wasnt the same fighter he was with rooney but he was in good enough physical shape and enough will to win to drop douglas after being beaten down for 8 rounds and was actually hurting douglas until the end. Tyson would have beaten most other HWs that night and douglas put on the best performance for a SHW that ive ever seen regardless of the opposition. He hit tyson with 4-5 punch combinations as if his head was the double end bag.

The bottom line is he was worse post Rooney than before Rooney left.

I think if he keeps Rooney he looks better against Bruno and beats Buster.

He would still have trouble with buster but he might do him in late, buster was really tiring towards the end. But i dont think firing rooney was the cause of his demise, more like a symptom of his growing overconfidence. Even with rooney tyson would have started slipping as the distractions grew and his passion faded, but yes technically tyson was a mich better fighter with rooney

Contro , I totally agree with you on this. Tyson against Bruno in the first fight was, in a nut shell, crap. There certainly was no spring or bounce in his step against Frank. He walked in, threw the big shots, then got him self tied up inside. Frank was burning nervous energy fast and this allowed Tyson to start connecting more as the fight went on. With no disrespect to Bruno, but he was fortunate to last as long as he did against Tyson, but that was imo because Tyson fought a shoddy one. I believe even Tyson claimed Bruno and Carl Williams should have beaten him back then.

Yep in that fight tyson was nothing but another short Heavyweight brawler, none of the things that made him special were seen there. Rooney must have been disgusted

Rooney would have been and if cus had been around he'd have been bellowing at Tyson.

"Nervous energy" very good point. He couldn't relax Bruno, purely because he wasn't a true fighter. On his nerves every time. That kind of psyche going against Tyson is always gonna end quickly !

Theres nothing they could've done to stop him ****ing up. He just wasn't very strong mentally. Like a kid in a sweet shop.

True on both posts Birmingham. Against Tyson you had to have a cool head and be confident. Unfortunately Bruno didn't bring that to the tyson fights. And regarding Tyson, he would have eventually exploded against an opponent. As talented as he was, it went deeper than that. The mindset that he was never going to lose, whatever happened , that he would just have to hit them to beat em. Somewhere down the line , that kind of thinking betrays you.

No Buster doesn't deserve more credit
If Tyson was in shape Buster would have gotten his butt kicked.
If Rooney was in Tyson corner the night he lost to Buster he would have still lost
Rooney cant get in the ring to help him fight.

Yeah he needed someone like rooney, teddy or cus to balance the overconfidence back out so that he would be confident and agressive in the ring but at the same time still training hard and taking care of himself outside of the ring.
That being said Cus never did what he should have as tysons legal guardian, all he wanted was to create another HW champ before he died. He never gave him the parental guidance that he needed as a 14 year old thug from the gutter.

Tyson went downhill after rooney. But guys gave him trouble before rooney left, tillis, tucker, even greene went ten with him. None of those guys looked half as badass as Buster did. Buster could have probably beaten anybody that night. He even got hurt bad and still gutted it out. I cant watch that fight enough times, that was a great performance. So nice to see a guy like him put it all together abd have the fight of his life, well done Buster Douglas!

    Buster Douglas deserves FULL CREDIT.

Tyson gets full credit for beating Berbick, Smith, Tucker and Spinks for their titles.
So Douglas should get full credit for winning the titles from Tyson.

It doesn't work like that I'm afraid, you have to remember every fighter that Tyson beat was at their absolute peak wheras every person that beat Tyson defeated a man at his absolute worst.

I think that that Tyson (Feb 90) still beats Ruddock or any other top-10 contender, besides Holy or Buster himself.
