Darchinyan was credited a knockdown as Gorres clearly lost his balance as he slipped, making the crowd rowdy as they pelted the ring with coins and bottled water. Gorres came back in the second round as he hit Darchinyan with a clean left hook to the face. Fron then on it was action-packed as both combatants exchanged clean blows. In the 6th round, Gorres got hit by a headbutt, causing an ugly gash on his right forehead. Gorres bled profusely throughout the match and seemed to be fading towards the end. The Filipino however hung tough as he avoided Darchinyan's blows with good head and body movements. A left straight that hit Gorres' right shoulder and barely hitting his face floored the Filipino in the 9th canto. Darchinyan strafed Gorres with wild lefts, a few of them caught Gorres. Scores were 113-112 for Gorres, 114-112 for Darchinyan and the third judge saw it 113-113.More to come...[/FONT]
yeah, they were pretty clear knockdowns too, altrhough the bottle pelting probably scared the ref a little
I'll give you the REAL MAIL! Vic dominated the fight, especially the 2nd half and knocked Gorres down twice without either being called knockdowns. This was because the ref was terrified after calling a first round knockdown (as raff stated) which was technically a correct decision (even though Gorres was unbalanced.) With both knockdowns the fight should have been 115-109. Even without them being knockdowns it still should have been 115-111, or 8-4 with 1 KD each. Vic was robbed. The decision won't be reversed on appeal.
hi. i just got back from cebu. my apologies for they way the crowd acted but the referee was just plain stupid. he should quit right now. if it means anything to yall, i had vic winning 114-111. and that is a biased score for gorres because i am pinoy. the weird thing is the pinoy judge had vic winning, the aussie judge had a draw and the thai judge had gorres winning. again, my apologies to all aussies. your boy should have won. i hate his antics in and out of the ring but he was clearly the better fighter that night.
Backs up what I heard from my ex girlfriends brother who are Filo's. Said that the stage was set for controversy after round 1 and the ref was "very nervous" after that. He said 115-111 while you had it 114-111. Appears clear cut. BTW, it's not hard for home town crowds to get out of hand and while the few who played up did go overboard I'm told it was only a stupid minority that threw crap into the ring. Anyone caught throwing coins should be bitten by Mike Tyson.
i just read the article. that was a grave mistake by the writer. gorres is left handed and he threw a right hook to drop darchinyan and not a left hook.
