Robinson only weighed about 157 when he fought Maxim for the Lightheavyweight title. He was never a Lightheavyweight, or even close to it. It's an unfair match-up.

Roy would probably beat him at middleweight...Roy was is harder to beat there anyway IMO.

It's a better matchup at middleweight.

When Ray Robinson faced Joey Maxim, it was nevertheless a light heavyweight title bout. Maxim wasn't ever known to be a hard hitter, but Robinson was ahead on the scorecards when he retired on the stool.

You do realize that in 200 fights, Robinson was never knocked out, right? He was a very versatile boxer who could fight just as well going forward as backward.

That being said, a matchup at Middleweight would be interesting.

    He fought against a light-heavyweight.

He was 157 lbs when he fought Maxim.

Hell, all of the fights when he was above 160 lbs, say a pound or two, came after his peak anyway.

The topic says "prime Sugar Ray Robinson".

    Prime Sugar Ray Robinson= welterweight.

Now a middleweight Robinson, pre-tap dancing career, against a middleweight Jones, is a great matchup indeed.

Ray was quite easily making the middleweight limit in his 40's, after 25 years as a pro...that should give you some indication of what weight he was naturally suited to.

Once in his entire career, when he weighed in about 20 pounds below the limit, and lost out of exhaustion due to the sweltering heat after the 13th round. He never fought there again.

    This thread sucks.

    not fair
Roy is to many generations infront
he has never seen speed and footwork like that. Athletes get better as time goes on
Mayweather is a product of that as his trainers both fought lenard and whitaker
