German hero 'The Black Uhlan' was one of the greats. When he fought the rematch with Joe Louis in 1938 at Yankee Stadium in New York City the tension was palable to say the least. Max was in fear of his life and righfully so. The american press had their propaganda machine working overtime for this match. Schmelling was used a political pawn by the Nazis to represent aryan supremacy. Schmelling never publically, or to the best of my knowledge, privately espoused those views. But the angry mobs at the fight still had him totally paralized with fear. Louis, of course, capitalized on this and battered Max mercilessly into a first round defeat. Why Schmelling's manager agreed to fight over here is anyone's guess. A neutral site would have leveled the playing field more. Although I still think Louis would have won anyway. Klitschko was a slightly robotic yet very effective fighter. He had a lot of heart, a great chin, imposing size, a huge reach and a booming right hand. Let the fireworks begin! I see Klitschko's physical advantages over Schmelling to be telling here. I don't see any chance for Schmellng to concievably win. However, Max would be game and he had a big heart and obviously great skills. His right hand was one of the best in history. Klitschko, unlike his younger brother, had granite in that chin and would not be hurt too badly by Schmelling. Klitschko's size and superhuman strength prevail here. Vitali Klitschko KO 8 Max Schmelling
Schmeling was BY FAR the superior boxer, but Klitschko's physical advantages would overwhelm him. As much as I hate to say it (Schmeling is one of my favorite fighters) I think Klitschko would win.
I have to go against the orthodoxy here. Schmeling is simply an order of magnitude more proven at world level. While there are a large number of uncertainties about this match up I will go with the proven quantity over the theoretical quantity.
