I was watching Frazier v Foreman 1 on youtube the other day.At the fights' conclusion Ali's 'sorcerer' Drew Brown is clearly seen doing his 'hollering and weeping' for Foreman's benefit. Had he become part of Foreman's entourage ? Or was he trying to be ? The following year he was back as Ali's sidekick in Zaire, against Foreman. An interesting guy.I've heard a few tales about him...he once sold one of Ali's belts ? I believe he was the first of Ali's gang to die (1987) only 59. Anyone any views or tales on this fella ?
Ali only commented on Drew a few times one being that he said he was one of the most profane men he had ever known. I don't recall Drew ever being apart from Ali's entourage or associated with George, after Ali retired he managed a few fighters for a short time, I believe Marty Monroe was one of them. I've never come across him having access to or selling one of Ali's belts, that would be strange and I'd be interested how it would have come about. I can't recall off hand how the two became associated.
I've seen pics of Bundini congratulating Foreman after he beat Frazier. He was n't in George's camp, though,to my knowledge. Most expected Joe to win in Jamaica so more than likely Bundini was there promoting his boss' claim for a long overdue Frazier rematch. Muhammad, himself, was training for the Joe Bugner bout just a few weeks ahead so he no doubt sent Brown in his stead
Bundini was originally part of Sugar Ray Robinson's entourage, and it was Robinson who introduced them. During one of Ali's later, tougher fights, he trudged back to his corner and Bundini yelled something like "one more round and this bum'll quit, champ!" Ali just said "ah, shut up."
Coming back to the corner after the fight, Ali knew the fight was close and was pretty tense. Bundini, was screaming he had won, and Ali in a moment of frustration pushed him and then hit him. After the scores were announced a visibly relieved Ali seemed much more relaxed. Ali's career was pretty much on the line here, and Norton had again given him a tough fight.
Angelo Dundee says he objected when Brown first came into the camp, but he relented when he realised he simply kept Ali cool and chilled out.
Ali used to slap Bundini Brown around on a regular basis and berate him. He even fired him from camp at least once. Brown was kind of like Ali's whipping boy. A shameless, paid sycophant who took whatever **** Ali dished out always coming back for more grinning in order to get that paycheck. Brown had the same role with other fighters including Jeff Merritt while he was being managed by Don King and trained by Giachetti. I get the impression that Bundini worked for himself and went where the money was. Loyalty meant nothing to him so i wouldnt be surprised if he was working with King to get closer to Foreman or if he was just there trying to ingratiate himself to Foreman in order to have an "in" with the next champion.
