Anybody have any idea of how to improve footwork? My caoch says it is holding me back. It is not an issue of being light on my feet, im 6'1 and under 140 its more of an issue of placement. I also have a tendancy to lean to far forward and slightly to the left at times. Aside from shadow boxing are there any other techniques you can employ to work on this?
Sheesh, you're 6'1" and you weight less than me...I'm 5'6". I can't stand sparring with guys like you...lol. That damn reach.
Shadow boxing is best, how long have you been training for? The good thing is that you are noticing the issues. If you make a consious effort to change your position to the correct one, your muscles will remember the angles required in relation to each other (muscle memory). Slow mo, perfect shadow boxing.

And always keep these in mind: keep the proper stance; don't spread your feet too far apart; don't take large steps when moving; always bend at the knee; don't cross your feet; don't lean too much on your lead foot. When shadowboxing, doing focus pads or hitting the heavybag, you could also devote a few rounds solely on footwork. Things like moving from side to side, moving away or towards your opponent. You can incorporate slips, ducks and punches in all these when it all becomes natural. I hope that helped.
Not far off 3 months. My coach says I was coming along well, but last session he said my footwork was holding me back. I do notice it thinking abotu it now, also having the physique I do I have to adjust my feet because balance is a little difficult with sucha high centre of gravity.
Make sure your chin is behind your lead leg. I was leaning too war forward and when a coach pointed this out to me it almost instantly improved my balance which allowed me to throw smoother combinations and not come off balance when I throw my right hand.
try to sit back a bit i found that helped me a lot narrowing my stance and sitting back, i had too much weight on my front foot and would fall forward after i threw a right cross
This soudns rather like me. I throw a very good right hand but thats not the issue. My coach tells me, twice now, that I have two much weight on my front foot. Another problem is sideways movement, going forward and back, in and out im very light on me feet and good. However going side ways im a little less sure of myself and Ive had to stop myself switching stances, but I dont have good footwork moving laterally by any means.
Nope, high centre of gravity is very little to do with it, muscle memory and core strength sound the root of your problems. Your rear foot should be at a position to your opponent where you could pass them a ball. Your front foot should sit below your knee and you knee about 4-6 inches in front of your head. I'd really have to look at you with my own eyes to correct you, but thats pretty basic stuff. Trust me, correct punching technique will rememdy all your problems.
One thing he is very dogmatic about is having both feet point EXACTLY the same way, now this feels very uncomfortable and it feels more natural the have the front foot angled slightly more forward than the rear.
Whose your trainer, thats absolutely stupid. The rear foot should be pointed ay about two o clock, the front should be as you say almost straight forward, probably at about 10 past 12..... If both your feet point the same way when not throwing punches, what happens when you rotate your right foot when throwing a right hand?
your coach should take you through some footwork drills.. Try some spins, step outs , moving in all directions. Get in the ring during training and do a few round of only footwork, mix it up.
