I have a fight on 16th April, against a guy I really want to beat (it's against the guy who always fights ahead of me at my weight, I know I'm better than him but he runs my university boxing club so he always fights and gets beat up... but then I would say that!).

When would you stop drinking, in my position - I found out about the fight on Sunday so I've upped my training in preparation... stopped the weight training (the girls can wait 5 weeks ;) ) and upped the cardio/bodyweight/bagwork etc. Also hoping to get some tuition off a guy called Herol Graham when I go back home - I hope you guys know about him.

Anyway, when do you stop drinking before a fight. In the words of Frank Sinatra:

"I feel sorry for people that don't drink. When they wake up in the morning, that's as good as they're going to feel all day."

If you're serious about boxing and training, you wouldn't be drinking in the first place.

There's no reason you (or any athlete) shouldn't drink; as long as its not ******ed binge-drinking (which I get the impression is what you mean by 'drinking').

Moderate (meal based) alcohol consumption has been suggested by many studies to reduce the incidence of heart disease (especially in males), while other studies have indicated moderate indulgence has neither positive nor negative side effects as re. health.

If you ARE a binge drinker then you need to grow up quickly, thats my only advice.

Herol Graham - cool! Let us know how that goes.
As for drinking, you should stop now.
A pint or two of beer won't really do any harm, but the funny thing with drinking is the less you do it, the less you miss it.

choose rum for your drink of choice.
it's a spirit and is thick and purely sugar. gets you drunk as quick as possible and it's sugars can be broken down so after the drinking session you'll have all ethenol out of your system in a week. where as other drinks will hang around longer, unknown to you

where as whiskey/whisky is a starch
beer is very heavy and will give you a beer belly in no time.
vodka...i heard does more damage to your liver and kidneys than any other drink on the market. but that only what i heard.

just remember water is the key, drink alot of water to wash it out of your body. when you get up in the morning your hangover is a form of hyper dehydration as you have replaced most body fluid with ****ing booze,it does kill your body.

so have your 2 shots of rum after a light run (doing some excercise makes you feel drunker than usual) then have a pint of water. go home with your mates hang out. have a **** then another pint an hour before sleep.

it's obvious duh

Alcohol is alcohol. It converts to acetaldehyde very quickly so I'm not sure what you mean about ethanol being present a week later. Alcohol has a very short half-life in the human body.

Beer does have more calories you're right on that. As far as the difference in liquors you're talking about thats mainly due to congeners, basically impurities left over from fermintation/distillation. A good rule of thumb is that the more color in the drink the more impurities present in the alcohol. Vodka has far fewer cogeners than whiskey for example. Red wine has quite a few which is why the hangover can be so bad if anyone's ever drank 3-4 bottles of red wine at a time. Not fun the next morning.

Stick with clear alcohols if you have to drink and staying hydrated is the key. Something with electrolytes is also benefitial the next day. Gatorade etc.

A beer now and then or a few shots if you go out isn't going to kill your training. But binge drinking and boxing can put a hell of a lot of strain on your body. Steer clear if you can.
