Punches to the head are the most dangerous thing to happen. In MMA you don't get hit around the head anywhere near as much.
You also fight for less time against people who aren't as skilled with their hands or who hit as hard.
In MMA you get hit by knees and elbows but acumulative blows are more dangerous than single heavy shots, hence why lighter weight fighters are more liable to brain injury than heavyweights.
In MMA once you ar down and taking punishment the fight is over- you dont get 8 seconds to compose yourself and thrown back in to action.
In MMA you have lighter gloves as well, people think that makes it more dangerous, but it doesnt, the added weight in a boxing glove causes additional damage. Imagine how much heavier a punch you could throw with a small lead weight in your grasp, compared to a bare hand.

I box amatuer in the UK and a guy who won our national chamionships last year (and beat me on route) failed a drug test. He had no financial incentive to cheat but cheat he did. I don't think it is beyond the realms of possibility that a fair proportion of boxers use steroids to impriove their performance. The guy who beat me has been banned for life by the way...

By the way I don't actually believe Pacquiao has taken roids as his in "on th enight weight" hasn't fluctuated that much, but I still belueve boxing is decades behind in its detection.

my problem with random testing, and out of comp testing for boxers is, what if the fighter decides to "retire" after a fight then come back? surely you wudnt be able to test retired fighter?

This was posted earlier "You know how boxers would beat year round testing? They would retire after every fight! Sound like anyone?" No they don,t test retired people! they are taken out of the year round testing pool.

Drugs are not just used to increase or gain muscle mass - I always assumed that they increased certain hormones which could lead to more energy etc. Also, blood doping is illegal and increases the amount of oxygen circulating in the body for stamina and endurance - so it can benefit boxers to use some drugs.

I also heard that you could never eliminate drugs in sports, athletes cheat the system until the authorities find a method of detecting certain drugs - by then some 'genius' has dreamed up another drug which beats the techniques currently used - for every adaptation drug authorities make the drugs scene makes a counter adaptation. This is why some people think it should just be made legal although I AM NOT ONE OF THOSE PEOPLE!!! I must stress.
