I dont know why anyone would base anything off of Ring ratings. They werent official, they often featured fighters who didnt deserve a ranking but were ranked for political reasons or to drum up sales, and for years they completely ignored the newer weight classes which skewed their ratings beyond any common sense. I wont even get into the ratings scandal which took place during Bobicks career. Using the Ring ratings as a measuring stick is beyond pointless.
Totally agree, I had a back and forth with a fellow poster a while ago ( we all cool now ) and one of his complaints to me was , I should have, or didn't use the Ring ratings, doh !!! stay safe buddy.
Maybe, but you had fun with your youth! And your recall of it is good. Isn't that what matters? I mean not everyone can talk about Boxing Illustrated and Randy Newman. Duane Bobick is and over rated but reasonably talented fighter who earned just shy of a million dollars in boxing. But his stories! As for his best win, I pick his KO over Mike Weaver or his KO7 or his KO in 1 of that Canadian little Tommy Burns : )
I don’t disagree that the Ring ratings may be flawed but using them for discussion isn’t wrong — should we use the WBC or WBA ratings instead … like no one undeserving ever got ranked there? I mean by their very nature rankings are subjective so there’s always going to be some disagreements. As for the Ring’s rankings being manipulated for the ABC tournament, no doubt that’s a major black eye but that was only the U.S. rankings at the time because it was a U.S. title tournament, right? What would that have to do with their world rankings? I’m not saying they’re the be-all/end-all of rankings, carved in stone and irrefutable, but using them as a basis of comparison is no better or worse than using any other set of rankings. It’s just a baseline — if you say ‘Floyd Patterson was in the Ring top 10 for X years/months’ to illustrate he was a top heavyweight for a long time … well, he was.
Ronny, if you have those magazines in front of you verifying those ratings, then I bow to your facts on the subject. I simply don't recall him that high and am looking only at the year end ratings of '74 and '74 where he held no rating at all. A lot can happen during the course of the year to prove year-end ratings wrong, but I'm amazed he made it that high with the paltry wins he had. Regarding Wepner being the highest rated, again, if you have the issues in front of you, are you sure he was still rated #9? He was rated #9 at the end of '75, but had only a win over a journeyman until the Bobick fight in October. Did he retain that ranking all year until then? If not, then Neuman at #10 was his highest rated opponent at the time of his win.
Make that two of us. No Ring magazine ranking aren't perfect but they are better than the alphabet rankings any day. I never saw better ranks than the Ring who has a panel of men working on them.
Yes to me that comes to mind of Duane's big wins, Although LeDoux was not in the top tens at the times, huge Minnesots record box office fights . Scott was in This content is protected USA ratings, And Duane Bobick defeated him ez barely if even losing a round in those two bouts combined.
I do not want to inflict YOU EVEN MORE SCARTISSUE - And I will rundown they exact times of the bouts, I do have all the ratings and made my own record books. ITS AMAZING WHAT PEOPLE WITH NO LIFE AS WE KNOW IT -are capable of. At least 1959-79 You can take my This content is protected (monthly) to the bank.

Hi Swagdelfadeel 1-Ring Magazine- Their the best and unbiased anyway, ESPECIALLY WITH THE GREAT Nat Fleischer (who died June 1972)-of the pack (of wolves lol) 2-WBA- Everyone seems to go by them and Ring more often then not if you look up old Newspaper clippings. However they took Joe Frazier's undefeated Lofty no. 2 ranking away and demoted his smoke to ninth 9/1/67 For he refused to enter their 8 man tournament of "CHAMPIONS" . They also refuse to rank Muhammad Ali in their listings until 6/29/71 When Ali won a court order!- Yet they had guys like Terry Daniels, Ron Stander , and Dave Zyglewicz in their top tens. -The Battle of the Century ALI WAS UNRANKED BY WBA! (Ali had to win WBA title 4 times! Liston, Terrell, Foreman and Spinks.) 3- Commissioner Gordon (Randy Gordon) Did a great job for the World & International Boxing mags top 15, but they did not start till 1971. 4-Boxing Illustrated -A day late and a dollar short , yet at least they would list a top 50. 5.WBC - I cannot even get started on them, I do believe they might have got a lil better thru the years, mostly by copying other boxing publications! Case in point we all know the Irishman & "BELLFLOWER BOMBER" HW Jerry Quarry. he's no.2 in their listings after beating undefeated MacArthur Foster, okay when he fights Muhammad Ali they expelled him from their ratings for about an entire year till he fought Jack Bodell, for no apparent or given reason!! Now this was at least a month before he fought Muhammad Ali 10/26/70 in Atlanta! Well maybe you say they did not want Quarry(a top contender) fighting Ali from his exile? No! They ranked Ali no.1 for defeating Quarry!
