My unabiased Opinion Duane Bobick should not have been ranked over Lyle, Shavers, Young or even Joe Bugner without fighting and defeating one of them! Commissioner-Gordon (Randy Gordon) This content is protected actually had Bobick no. 3 in his top 15's - This content is protected no. 4 Did you know Duane Bobick won 100 of 101 amateur and pro fights in succession? (100-1) he had a 62 bout amateur win streak & an Olympic victory defeating the great Russian Yuri Nesterov (2 Stevenson wins!). Bobick wins (Pan Ams vs Stevenson)-then loses in to Stevenson in they Olympics (Bronze Medal). then going into the Ken Norton MSG NY Bout, his pro record was 38-0 (32Ko) Before Bobick's great Amateur win streak (62 bouts) he was 31-9 and knocked out visciously by Ron Lyle (January 1971).
You don't worry about that, Ronny. I don't doubt you have the facts in front of you. That's what this forum is all about. A share or a correction on ideas. I just don't care for it when it goes to arguing in an uncivil manner. But you're cool, and again, you have the facts in front of you. So it seems according to what you have that Wepner was the highest rated whom Bobick fought at #9.
SCARTISSUE:-how bout this one? This content is protected Dec 72 (10-15-72) Champion: Joe Frazier 1-Muhammad Ali 2-George Foreman 3-Jose Luis Garcia 4-Jimmy Ellis 5-Floyd Patterson 6-Oscar Bonavena 7-Ron Lyle 8-Jurgen Blin 9-Jose Roman 10-Ken Norton With all due respect to Garcia, he should never have been ranked after the big 3 Frazier, Ali and Foreman. besides his big win he did not even get top ten rating Ken Norton in 1970 at they Olympic Auditorium in LA.
And thats exactly why I Stated Bunny Johnson may have been Bobick's best opponent win, I had shoulder surgery from a motorcycle accident in Bakersfield Calif. May 24, 1976. (nite of the bout) It was nationally televised and I was told Bunny Johnson JUST GAVE BOBICK FITS. Bobick 209 lbs, Johnson 185 lbs I have Bunny as a friend on facebook, we've never chatted about this Munich bout -(MAYBE WE SHOULD) Yes Chuck Wepner was Bobick's highest rated pro victory at #9.-Larry Middleton was also ranked fourth BY THE This content is protected IN 1972.
If I was rating the best fighter (not the highest rated) he beat (at the time) I would say Middleton. Although he lost his rating, Larry would still go on to give Ken Norton and Scott Ledoux a couple of hard fights. But Bobick outclassed him on points widely. Regarding his bout with Johnson, I saw the fight at the time and thought Bunny gave him real trouble the first couple of rounds. In fact there was one instance where Duane didn't look too good, like he may have been rocked. And then Bunny let fly a beautiful right cross, which unfortunately for him, missed Bobick's jaw. I really thought at the time if he had pasted Duane with that it could have incurred a knockdown. But the last 3 rounds of the fight Bunny just couldn't get off. he had a bad cut in his mouth, but it almost looked like he had stopped at that point and Duane just pounded on him, exerting that weight on the much smaller and lighter Bunny.
I've also heard Neumann was 3-0 after 3 going into the fourth round where Bobick ko'd him. MSG NY. And your right about Randy's Kirkman friday nite fites victory , but was not ranked tenth right away after the victory. Randy had actually won another over an unranked opponent. Duane Bobick Amateur 93-10 (60 Ko) and Pro record (48-4 42Ko). That' Impressive!
The WBA may have had good ranking back in the day, but ever since they ranked a dead man they have frankly stunk. Take a look at their current heavyweight rankings, I think the dead man might be better.
I wished there were Boxing video's of -D. BOBICK-LeDoux bouts , Set gate records for Minnesota, Bugner, Quarry and Bonavena vs Larry Middleton, Lyle-Bonavena, Quarry- BUSTER Mathis Sr. to name a few.
But did they ever rank middleweight Wilbert “Vampire” Johnson at middleweight? Pretty sure he would be the only undead fighter ever ranked if so.
