"JoJo" Díaz looks a bit more developed muscularly in his upper body (back and arms) than I remember him...but a bit soft in the middle. "Rougarou" Prograis looks fit, rocking a six pack. Díaz declines an interview and barely locked eyes with his opponent during the staredown. Prograis says both he and Díaz are at career crossroads and need the dub. Don't sleep on them producing a good fight. He's satisfied no matter what happens because he became champ at least once but he's still hungry. He loves the fans and can't wait to rumble. ODLH says Chicago has a rich history in the sport (Sugar Ray Robinson, Ali, etc) and he wants to make it a boxing town again starting with tomorrow's card. He hypes up Kenneth Sims, Jr. and predicts an explosive match-up with winning meaning a ticket to a world title opportunity.
Duarte-Sims staredown is much more intense than the Prograis-Díaz one. They look like they actually want to murder each other. De la Hoya seemed actually nervous to be in between them.
Joe Martínez says doors at 4pm Central, coverage on DAZN from 7pm Central (5pm Pacific / 8pm EST) with main event ring walks taking place two hours later (9pm Chicago time / 7pm Pacific / 10pm EST)
Sims has a chip on his shoulder, and says Duarte tried getting all smiley and friendly (I guess at the last presser) but after the amount of trash-talk in the buildup, it's time for backing it up. He says he's gonna BTA (beat that ass, presumably) and make Duarte an employee of the Bossman. He says he's going to do it for Chicagoans because "I'm tha one". No interview from Duarte.
Interesting that neither Prograis nor Díaz bothered coming even close to making the 140lb limit (the co-main and main event were both originally supposed to be at super lightweight) and came in effectively as welters. Probably has something to do with the fact that Duarte vs. Sims is an eliminator, while their match isn't.
Rolando Chinea beat him, the late Samuel Teah beat him, Batyr Akhmedov clearly beat him but was robbed, and he struggled mightily with the walking corpse of Kendo Castaneda, arguably drawing with him. Sims has an issue with even half decent somewhat featherfisted pressure fighters, Duarte is going to eat him alive.
Based on the staredown and his interview, Sims has a big chip on his shoulder and the confidence to believe he's going to blow Duarte out. Could be fun to walk him dive headfirst into a woodchipper.
Not sure where his delusional ass got all of this confidence from, but I'm certainly happy he does. It'll make that crash back down to earth all the more devastating. Let's see, Sims is coming off of barely beating a gatekeeper in Castaneda. While Duarte is coming off of handing Madueno his first stoppage loss, who went the distance with Keyshawn Davis. Of course Duarte didn't blow people away against Akhmedov, but unlike Sims who ran for his life, Duarte actually had the balls to go to toe to toe war with him, and actually beat him fairly, even though it was only by a point.
When's the last time Prograis scored a body shot KO? Velasco? It used to be a formidable part of his game, and if I was in his team I'd be salivating over the spare tire JJD brought. Skimming through highlight videos to remind myself - Relikh was stopped standing with his face broken (ditto McKenna), Heraldez was a left cross on the chin, Chon Zepeda was a monster overhand left (a series of them actually) edit: never mind, found it... Redkach.
