Not my words but Barry McGuigan. He claims that he watches Dubois and sees a twenty first century Sonny Liston. Now, im impressed with DD at the moment but he's a loooong way to go yet, to even show us he's as good as Frank Bruno! Anyway.. Thoughts?
Way to early imo George to really compare him to any heavyweight who even won a belt. Im old enough to remember Tyrrell Biggs being built up as.. Wait for it... The Ali to Tyson s Frazier!! On the other hand, when Lewis first started out, I can honestly say I had a lot of confidence he was going to be very successful. Just something about him, you just knew he was going places. But as for Dubois? Time ll tell.
The next couple of years will tell you more. I mean he passes the eye test and he’s still a pup at 22. But we’re yet to see how he reacts when he gets tagged for example, and he needs to be in there with better opposition soon but I’m starting to think he’s in with a good shout of going to the top.
Its actually funny because I was thinking the same thing. That jab and the way he lets his punches go does remind me of Sonny Liston. People can laugh all they want but style wise and purely viewing it from the "eye test" there are quite a number of parallels there.
He reminds me of Liston in his boxing But in terms of levels from a British HW perspective? He is already above A Farce and Price He needs to prove is above Bruno. This is to be confirmed. Getting to the level of Lewis is doubtful. Just because Lewis is an elite top 3 HW of all time. At this stage I predict he come ends up somewhere above Bruno and below Lewis
Since it's being about 50 years since Liston had his last fight, it's hard to make any real comparison between the two from just watching old films of Liston. At this point, if I had to compare him to another heavyweight, to me Dubois looks more like a 21st century Ike Ibeabuchi than a Liston.
Dubois will succumb to a overweight behemoth in the next 5 fights. He can't box on the backfoot, and it will be evident soon. Dinner plate pickings we call them.
My thoughts are Barry should stick to commenting on lower weight boxing. Liston was a bad man. An intimidator who went through the division's top ten before getting a title shot. Very skilled, and not stiff. I don't see guys scared vs. Dubois, he has not fought anyone in the top 40, he's moderately skilled and a little stiff. Out of the ring, he's nothing like Liston either, and with women, they could be 100% opposites.
He is, maybe in around 5 years time we'll be calling him another Sonny Liston.. Or maybe another Alex Stewart..
Of course, since Liston has magical powers bestowed on him just for being dead and having been born a long time ago.
