I’m wondering how Dubois would be viewed here if he didn’t have a mishap early in his career against Joyce and he never ran into Usyk but had his run. Dubois run post Joyce: Trevor Bryan beat former HW champ Stivetne and former contender BJ Flores. Not raving about this win but it was solid. Kevin Lerena: Similar to Trev solid win but nothing to write home about. Quality of wins start ramping up here Jarrell Miller: Took Millers 0 here who is a very tough known opponent with a swarming style. Miller is one of the most annoying fighters stylistically to deal with. Very good win. Hrgybear: took Hrgybears 0 and beat him down. Excellent win for him. Joshua: Stopped Joshua but also was outboxing him and making him look below his level. Only Usyk had outboxed Joshua. Ruiz loss Joshua was winning easily. Top tier win. Based off these wins going into the Usyk fight you’d think it was his time. But the GOAT said even though I’m 40 and you’ve been on one of the craziest HW run in the past 10 years and you’re in your prime you’re getting embarrassed.
Yeah I’m not comparing it to the 70s-90s but for 2000s who’s really had a run like this? It’s a handful of guys at HW.
Dubois had great victories against Hrgovic, Joshua and Miller. He lost to Joyce and Usyk, but learned a lot from those losses as well. He's been competing at championship level for years. Wardley is definitely not on Dubois’ level and doesn’t have the same experience. Tomorrow night, Dubois will finish Wardley off easily.
It's a very good run. High risk and he stopped them all. Usyk snatching all the momentum back is equally insane.
Decent run, even if I think the Miller and Hrgovic wins are a bit overrated. I don't consider taking a knee against Joyce as a "quit" due to the level of injury, but both Usyk bouts were absolutely shameful quits. All in all he's a pretty basic plodder with big power. There's no shortage of that at heavyweight.
Miller, Hrgovic, Joshua was a very good run. Dubois is similar to Joshua: big, powerful, athletic, well-drilled. Worse chin and more quit, but unlike Joshua he will have a good go before he quits, which is why he was able to take the initiative and run AJ over.
I think Joshua has the better amateur pedigree (even accounting for the complaints about the manufactured gold medal etc.) and better skills, but they definitely have a lot in common. Joshua is more "creative" in the ring too, which isn't speaking for much since they're both extraordinarily stiff, but AJ has more tools at his disposal and opponents have to look out for a greater variety of shots and counters when going up against him. That being said, I think Dubois more than makes up for those shortcomings through his determination. Not sure about whether "quit" is the right word: they both have an issue there, but some other poster was mentioning how Dubois loses confidence only if he can't land and is getting absolutely outclassed. However, if he is in the fight, you'd have a hard time questioning his determination: he took some big shots against Hrgovic and Big Baby, and he showed a lot of grit to pull off those wins. AJ on the other hand will stay in the ring, but he gets shaken up whenever an opponent comes there to win, is unafraid of him, and lands a solid shot on him. He loses his composure and his polish once he gets touched up: just look at his fights against Ruiz 1 (sure, he had heart in that he stayed in the ring after the KDs but he had a hard time recovering and getting back in the fight mentally), Ruiz 2 (dancing around an obese opponent for 12 rounds), Usyk 1, and Dubois. He recovered against Wlad and Povetkin, but he took up a lot of rounds in doing so. I honestly think that Dubois would beat most, if not all, of AJ's opponents which AJ beat throughout his career if you put a similarly-aged Dubois in those fights. AJ was 26 when he had his first real test in Dillian Whyte, and Dubois was 26 when he beat Big Baby. I reckon Dubois would beat an old Wlad, a young Parker, a fat Andy Ruiz, Pulev, and all of AJ's opponents during that mini-run he went on after Usyk 2. The only opponent (that AJ beat) that would give him trouble is Povetkin, could see that fight going either way.
He blew his load trying to KO JJ whose chin then was pure granite. If he'd boxed he probably could have won a decision.
I like Dubois a lot. His interviews and pressers do be hilarious. He’s a good fighter as well. But still huge question marks over his heart. If had that Fury ability to get back up and keep going he’d be great.
