The guy who is genuinely ducked, is often as not a hype job who turns out to be a bust.

On the other hand, many champions have sleepwalked into a fight with their kryptonite, or have taken him as a tune up.

Great fighters are not any better at picking future winners than the rest of us.

It is therfore misleading to look at the era and say?

"A was active. Why didn't he fight A?".

why didn't holmes ever fight the top fighters of his time :
ali (when ali was still reigning) , frazier , foreman , young , why no rematch with norton ? , why didn't he try avenging his amateurs loss to duane bobick when bobick turned pro at the same time and was 38-0 when norton took care of him instead of holmes ,
and eventually his reign ended after 2 close fights against a lightheavyweight ?
so does he deserve any top10 ranking ?
i think frazier would have beaten him bad.

Are you saying he should of fought them before he won the title himself? Their peaks were all before Holmes come on the scene. There was no rematch with Norton cos he got knocked out in 1 by Ernie Shavers who Holmes did fight. Holmes crushed Neon Leon in 3. What year do you think he should of fought Frazier? Jimmy Young was losing twice to Ossie Ocasio when Holmes was winning the title. Holmes fought Ocasio on the strength of those wins and stopped him. As for fighting Foreman, when should this of taken place. When Holmes was a greenhorn or when they were both old men? It would of been interesting as it happens but I don't think it would of proven anything.

you answered me well regarding young , leon spinks and frazier
    you answered fine about norton
but regarding foreman , he could have fought him at 1976-1978 (maybe foreman would not have retired or would come back much earlier if he was offered a shot at the top-contender / champion)
and also should have fought him regardless when they were both old .
he did fight every other next champ , disregarding age :
spinks , tyson , holyfield , mccall , lewis and many more.
he did fight mike weaver and james smith just like you say : both when prime and when old. and foreman is holmes' age , so why not ?
he should have fought him twice , just like he did weaver and smith.
and i think foreman would have knocked him out.
foreman's outcome against ali was clearly affected by the loose ropes.
he just may have destroyed ali , had the ropes not been so loose.

Leonard offer Pryor a fight, but Pryor turned it down because he wanted more money (the offer was half a million). It was discussed in a Sports Illustrated article back then and also Pryor talked about it in the interview after beating Lennox Blackmoore.

Pryor said "he offered me half a million, I'll fight him for a million"

This one is pretty hard to swallow. The fight never came off; blame it on Leonard.

Leonard should've offered him more, but half a million was still about 10 times more than Pryor's previous career high payday for the Cervantes fight.

Given the fact that Pryor ending up making more fighting Arguello, a much more winnable fight than Leonard at WW (and Duran at 150, which fell apart due to Pryor's managerial problems), it was a good move for Pryor to turn it down.

I think so. It was always so hard to get a fight with Leonard

After the third fight with Norton, Ali said: "That's the last time I am fighting that turkey".

Would you mind explaining how Mosley ducked Mayweather, even though they are fighting May 1? Or how Mayweather ducked Pacquiao, despite agreeing to fight him if Manny would take the random drug tests? What about Holmes calling Foreman out since the late 70's? In every interview where Foreman is mentioned Larry calls George out, and even agreed to take a pay cut as their 1999 fights was starting to fall through, and it was George who was not willing to fight with the paycut. How did George duck Tony Tucker? I think you are assuming duck jobs were going on just because a fight did not take place.
