after john duddy's highly unimpressive last performance irish ropes have taken the action of relieving don turner of his duties and have hired Pat Burns as the new head coach,to me this comes as very good news as perhaps we will see much more effective aggression behind a jab from duddy,Burns is aiming to improve duddy's overall skill level in a training camp in miami before a fight on June 28th,most likely tune up,before stepping up competition by the beginning of 2009. we know that duddy gets drawn into slugfests but perhaps a more calculated approach from john can reap greater rewards and perhaps gain the respect of the boxing public who have loved watching him fight yet criticise him at every turn. what do you guys think of pat burns, realistically do you think he can make much difference to john's do or die style? please only constructive comments.
Couldnt agree with you more hopefully Pat brings more discipline to John so he wont drawn into brawls. In the smichet fight it seemed to me that when Don was telling him to stick to his game plan John just went ahead and fought with his heart instead of his head (or should that be his head instead of his brain...) That being said you cant help put love his all action do or die approach. They boy has alot of heart and a chin to go with it.
the smichet fight was terrible corner work from don turner, john was getting the head beat off him with big looping overhand rights and was trying to get out of the way with a low guard, never is going to work for john.don told him to go on the inside and fight him and take him with uppercuts but this was where he was getting caught,it wasnt until the 5th round he actually started to fight with a gameplan,i know john was anxious to impress infront of arum and new york but he should have realised that from the second round he wasnt going to ko that guy. duddy needs to fight off the jab,he can tire alot of boxers out with this and eventually go in for the kill rather than going for it in round 1,john's a target because he is so well known and whoever he fights is going to fight a level above they normally do and he needs to be aware of this and look for opening rather than just throwing with no indication of his own health,he's lucky as hell he has such a good chin, otherwise i think his tag of contender would have disappeared that night.
I hope it works out well for him. He may want to give a shout to Andy Lee while he is at it. Let me guess. You told Duddy your avatar was on the line and he decided it was time to get serious?
i think the new coach is just to take him that level above the rest,he's already so far ahead of everyone else in the division he just wants to ensure he can become a multiweight world champ.
