Has anyone ever seen the Korean film 'Champion' documenting the rise and tragic fall of Asian pacific Lightweight Title holder? The film Outlined just how much Kim's death had on the world of Boxing. No disrespect intended but how did Kim get a shot at Mancini? His Record was clearly modest. He had 18 fights against modest opposition, had never been 15 rounds, struggled to make weight throughout his career, lightly regarded by Americans.... His death could have definately been prevented. The hotel sceen when he writes 'kill or be killed/live or die' is apparently true.......enjoyed the film although i suspect it is greatly exagerated.
I just watched it the other day and I felt the same way. I remember watching that fight on TV. It was the final straw on 15 round fights...I remember talk of Kim still being alive if not for the 15 rounds... As far as Kim being in the fight...Well truth be told at that time Ray was kinda being writen off, he was about a year removed from taking a similar beatting himself at the hands of Alexis Arguello, and even though he had since picked up a title many felt that it was a paper title and that Ray was for the most parts done...which may have been true, but He didnt handle what happened to Kim well. I remember him putting on a good front, but I also remember an interview with his mother saying that it torn him up, and that he wasnt the same person after.
oh yeah thats correct. Very distraight times. Remember when Livingston Bramble brought in that Voodoo guy to curse on Manicini and made the statement about Mancini being cold blooded murderer.
Christ sakes.... YES! The # 1 ranking of Kim by the WBA was utterly bogus, but Kim rose to the occasion and fought Ray Mancini on even terms up until the 11th round.... The fight was fierce; no mismatch... YES! Mancini took control late in the fight, and Kim's corner probably should've tossed in the towel after the 12th round, but it was not a mismatch..... What happened in the 14th round could've happened anywhere... The death of Kim was something that sometimes happens in a rough sport / business / racket.... It was an epic war, but not a mismatch..... Peace.... MR.BILL
Exactly. The issue that should have been focused on in this fight was bogus rankings, not the length of fights. Basically, the TV networks took advantage of the tragedy to do what they wanted to do for some time - shorten championship fights so they fit into their time slots.
I also saw the fight. This was a Great Movie. They left out the fact that his mother killed herself and the referee as well in the Movie.
Side note: Has anyone heard of "Sun Kill Moon"? It's a band that's very much influenced by the world of boxing, so much so that the majority of their songs reference the sport, including one about Duk Koo Kim. Just curious if anyone had heard of them.
watching an old fight film last night Ray Mancini vs. Duk Koo Kim the boy from Seoul was hanging in good but the pounding took to him and there in the square he lay alone without face without crown and the angel who looked upon never came down Sun Kil Moon
I wonder how much that lamp is worth on ebay. I think its a myth.. seriously, who the hell desecrates hotel furniture..
